Tampons linked to infertility? Also posted on TTC in our 20's

Postby Tipper916 » Wed Jan 07, 2009 6:29 pm

I was really bored at work today and since the witch just showed her face the other day I decided that I would do some research on any studies where there may have been links between tampon usage and infertility. While there were no definitive studies either way (that I could find) I found a lot of anecdotal "evidence" that really made me think about my choice, now that I'm TTC and even beyond this. Inasmuch as I hate wearing pads, I think I'm gonna switch back to them for a while. At least while we're TTC. I don't know for sure if this even necessary, but for me personally, pads just make more sense. Even if you're changing your tampon as often as you should, how do you know with 100% certainty that using tampons isn't affecting your ability to conceive?

"Female Problems" run in my family and out of all of the women in my family (eight) who have had ovarian cysts, hysterectomies, endometriosis and other such problems, myself and my cousin (who is my mom's twin's daughter) are the only ones who have not had any of these problems. I have another cousin who is 6 months younger than I am, who has endometriosis and has used tampons her entire life (since puberty). I, however, did not start using tampons until my mid to late 20's. Waaay after my DS was born. Now don't get me wrong, this could just be a coincidence. I realize that there are MANY women who have used tampons faithfully and have had no trouble conceiving MULTIPLE children, but with all of the toxins (dioxin, which in high levels can be very toxic) and the risks (TSS or toxic shock syndrome) it stands to reason that maybe pads are a better (even if only for the short-term) option.

Sorry that this is soooo long, but I've been thinking about it all day and would love to hear your preferences and opinions.

When I started ttc again after my m/c I quit using tampons. I've been tampon free now for 2 yrs...LOL!!!

While I don't think you have to give up the use of tampons to beat IF, for me, it was just a better choice to make in the ttc journey.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this :) !!!

What made you decide to stop using tampons? Sorry if I'm asking too personal a question, I'm just curious...

No, it's not to personal. My ob and I actually discussed this, and though he doesn't push women to do this, he says it's better to use pads vs tampons. My mom (deceased now) had her dr tell her the same thing, to never use tampons. I get yeast infections from time to time, and kidney infections more so than yeast, so I avoid them all together.

I couldn't use them anyway after my d&c for infection reasons, and when I went back for my checkup is when I asked my dr's view on this.

I can't stand pads so I actually switched to the Diva Cup. Mostly because I have a very sensitive body and I like that the Diva Cup won't mess up my ph balance or dry me out in there. An added bonus is that it's better for the environment and a lot better on my poketbook since it is completely reusable. I did use pads during my m/c because I read it's better to prevent infection, and truthfully I was so sore from all of the cramping I couldn't imagine trying to put something up in there.

I've always used pads. I hate them and they're an inconvenience at times, but then again we're talking bout AF here... she's always an inconvenience. I think "plugging" anything up unnaturally is not a good thing for the body, even refused a mirena coil from my doc because I'd never put anything up there that isn't a human body part.

Like you said above about anecdotal evidence... maybe there are no real dangers to fertility using tampons, but I wouldn't rule it out. It's so unnatural and hundreds of years ago (when infertility didn't seem as rife as it is today) tampons didn't even exist.

i've stopped using tampons while TTC unless for some reason i have to wear something light colored or white. but i always used to wear tampons since i was like 13. i've just realized that since TTC i'm trying to know my cycles better and when i wear a pad it is easier to see how heavy or light my flow is and if theres any clotting, etc.

now i'm stuck with like 8 jumbo boxes of tampons. i would stash them everywhere! now i keep finding tampons in the weirdest places...

I'm with Photofashinista...but mine is a MoonCup as I'm in the UK...Been using it since AF's started back up after Depo over 3 years ago now. I'll never go back to pads or tampons...neither of them are very good for you (at least the regular, non-organic/washable ones). Do you know how many pesticides you're shoving into your who-ha when wearing tampons or how many are lingering outside your vagina with pads? And some women wonder why they get a rash during their period.... Yuck!

no thanks!

Sadi, yeah tampons themselves didn't exist hundreds of years ago...they used sea sponges or stuffed rags inside. ;) Not much better, really....and infertility was still a problem back then.

people get rashes during AF? i've never experienced this. and i've only had one yeast infection ever...during a really hot summer. i guess i always figured i would change the pad/tampon every two hrs whether it "needed" it or not. yucky that is gross. but then again i use the wet wipes constantly during AF. i hate her.

yep, I know lots of women (pad-wearers) who break out in a horrible rash, similar to a diaper rash, when on their period and it's not for lack of changing the pad...I think it's the pesticides. It's been a LONG time since I wore pads regularly, but I recall them making me itch something terrible and it isn't any wonder once you find out what's in them!

Oh goodness yes! The cotton in a regular, non-organic pad or tampon has dozens of pesticide and herbicide chemicals (etc) and topped off with bleach to make them pretty and white. PLUS any of them which are perfumed to make the stank less noticeable have those chemicals on top of all the others....not a pretty picture now, is it?

here's a few write ups.

 See why I switched to medical grade silicone which is non-absorbent? :D

oh crap! when i migrated over here to egypt for the second time, i brought 22 boxes of warehouse size boxes with me. i was here before for 3 and 1/2 years without them and i couldnt stand wearing pads anymore. i calculated and i think i have enough to last me til i reach menopause. i use pads sometimes.. but started using tampons when i was 12. i never heard they could affect fertility. i never had any problems from them. i heard the ancient egyptians used to stick papyrus leaves up there.

but i didnt know they have so many chemicals and stuff. maybe i will take a break from them. i just like to have one in when i get out of the shower so i dont get the towel messy.

ballerina mommy- i was reading one of your old threads in the weight loss section and i found we have something in common. I LOVE INDIAN FOOD!!!!!! i cant get enough of it. unfortunately its hard to find here. but i do know how to make saag. but i have to make it with spinach. oh id kill for some right now!!!!

i get terrible rashes during AF from pads, but refuse to wear tampons...I don't know about a diva cup for me..that sounds too odd ...

but tampons, forget it! my cervix is positioned so that when I wear a tampon during AF...I can't have a bm without removing the tampon..that totally sucks...

plus they hurt so bad..

I am a very HEAVY bleeder...and I love Always Ultra Thin Overnight..I still bleed through occasionally...but it is so much better than the painful tampons...
