I was hoping blood tests would NOT come back normal!

Postby McLinda » Thu Mar 30, 2017 3:22 pm

I finally went into a fertility specialist yesterday, and I thought it was just for a consultation because I was on 3rd day of period and assumed that they couldn't do an exam. Obviously, I was wrong, 3rd day is the sweet-spot for them. I wasn't expecting the sonogram dildo, but I was relieved that everything in my 37-year-old insides "appeared" normal.

I had 4 blood tests, Estradiol, Follicle Stim Hormone, TSH, and Anti-Mullerian Hormone. I was hoping that one of them would come back abnormal so that I could just take a drug like Clomid or something to help conceive. Three came back today as normal, the AMH test takes a week, I assume they must send it out to a third-party lab, but I don't think that result being abnormal is a good thing. Actually, I just read up on it today.

They charged my CC $750 yesterday for the sonogram and consult, I think they used my insurance for the labs. Honestly, I knew he was supposed to be a good specialist, but it was way more than I was expecting. The next thing on his list is the X-ray where he shoots the liquid up there looking for blocks in tubes, that's going to be $638 for his fee plus somewhere around $300 for the hospital where the procedure is preformed.

Call me paranoid but I can't help but wonder if he and his sonogram staff were too quick to be reassuring that my ovaries look great and tests are normal just so they can get the fee for the X-Ray and then IVF. I don't know, I guess I was just hoping my problem was treatable by fertility drugs. I'm not opposed to IVF or anything, as long as it's my own egg, but I'm terrified of having twins!

If your blood tests came back as normal, and yet you were unable to conceive, did you find out later that you had a block in your tubes?

I am new here, I've lurked for awhile but didn't feel right registering until I had actually gone into see a fertility specialist.

Hello and welcome.
All my tests were normal except the hsg that showed blocked tubes,I tried a lap surgery and a histeroscopy but nothing helped and after a few years of trying everything I could Im now pregnant with twins trough IVF,twins was my choice,we asked to transfer two embryos.
If you transfer one embryo the chances of having twins are very low so don't worry about that.
Have they checked ur LH and progesterone as well?!Has the doctor mentioned how many follies he saw on the scan and how was ur lining?!Has ur partner been checked?!

Congratulations on the twins!! Of course I would rather have two at once than none ever, I just don't know if my body can hold multiples. lol

Thanks for answering about the normal blood tests followed by finding out you had blocked tubes, I have a feeling I am going to have to go all the way with this and get the HSG and probably IVF. The doctor does want to test my husband and he's willing, but I know he isn't the problem. He has 3 children, now grown and one 16-year-old and he isn't the first man I tried getting pregnant with. I used to WANT to be a single mother. I figured I'd never find a good man (I did) but I always wanted children. I've never been pregnant though.

I did not have the LH or progesterone test, it wasn't offered. I only know which tests I had because I took a pic with my phone of the paper that I had to walk over and give to the lab. I'm glad I did, because I wasn't told which tests they were taking and I had to call them back and specifically ask which test takes a week to come back. I understand why now that I've looked it up, it has to be sent to another lab for analysis.

I'm going to wait until after my next period to have the HSG preformed, for financial reasons, but I'm guessing now that it is blocked tubes. I was really hoping that it was hormones, though I will be calling tomorrow to ask about the LH and Progesterone tests you mentioned.
