Gestational sac but BFN!? TMI

Tue Oct 03, 2017 11:27 am

We went to the doctor yesterday to initiate our last TTC journey. Randomly, I started my period a few days before but didn't want to cancel. The doctor wanted to do an ultrasound and we immediately saw what looked to be a small gestational sac. He mentioned a chemical pregnancy, but then whisked me off to take a urine pregnancy test and then a blood test. Urine tests are all negative. As soon as I got home I had a huge blood gush with some very large blood clots. I have PCOS and irregular cycles, blood clots are usually normal for me lately, but these were big. I am not sure what to think. I've been crampy and have no appetite the past few days.

Does this sound like it could be an early missed miscarriage or simply a very heavy period? Is there anything else that "sac" could have been? He said it didn't look like a cyst.

That sounds like a miscarriage to me. Sad of course, but it shows it is possible!

In my opinion, you would know for sure if it was a miscarriage. You wouldn't doubt it. Miscarriages are insanely painful. They usually start off like a heavy period but then the cramping is just way too intense and it usually lasts about an hour until you pass out the sac.

There are probably people who have had completely different experiencs.. but my own experience and those of people I know personally were all the same.

So I doubt it was a miscarriage. It could have been a clot of blood or something.

I hope you're healthy now and I wish you every success with your ttc journey. Baby duuuussstt xx

I had a very early misscariage, maybe 5w and my experience was similar to yours, heavy blood flow and clotts but the pains weren't that bad.
I know I had a misscariage bcs I had done blood tests.

I disagree with Betty. Also had an early MC and it wasn't all that painful, just bled like a normal period. Mine was confirmed through blood tests so I know for sure I was pregnant as I had a beta of 42 a few days before the bleeding.

To me, it sounds like you may have had an early MC as well, although bleeding can be common in early pregnancy. When will you get your betas back? Will he do a follow-up scan?

That is absolutely not the case for everyone or even most people. Everyone is going to have a different amount of cramping, but that early on, there's not much for the body to expel so cramps generally won't be as intense as a later miscarriage.

A gestational sac can't be seen on ultrasound until about 5 weeks, and at that point is about 10mm - or 1cm, or less than half an inch. It's tiny, and you aren't going to notice passing it as anything other than a regular clot.

OP - I'm sorry. It sounds like you had been miscarrying for a couple of days already when the doctor did the ultrasound.

Hello, I had something that looked like a pregnancy sac. The doctor did a blood test and it came back as negative did pregnancy so she sent me for an MRI of the pelvis. Turns out I had a degenerating fibroid that looks like s pregnancy sac. Over time the fibroid will go away on its own.
