Fibroids, Surgery, & Conception

Postby lillymac17 » Wed Jan 10, 2018 5:56 pm

I have 4 fibroids on the outside of my uterus. After fertility testing and an unsuccessful IUI, we've decided to have the fibroids removed. Has anyone had fibroids removed, conceived, then had a successful pregnancy? We've been TTC for 21 months and had an unsuccessful IUI. I'm looking for hope.

I had a 4cm fibroid and a smaller fibroid behind it, removed from dead center of my uterus last year. It was literally in the worst possible place for conception/implantation, as it was a submucosal fibroid. Luckily we hadn't started trying yet, but my obgyn said that it would definitely hinder conception so I didn't hesitate to have it removed. This was in April 2017. We conceived on our 2nd cycle in May 2017. We lost the baby due to an incompetent cervix, but my Fert specialist and Ob Gyn both confirmed that the IC had nothing to do with the fibroid surgery. It is very possible to conceive after fibroid surgery. Good luck to you.

Because fibroids can grow back, it is best to try to conceive as soon after a myomectomy as is safely possible and your recovery from surgery is complete. Fibroids return after surgery in 10 to 50 out of 100 women, depending on the original fibroid problem. Fibroids that were larger and more numerous are most likely to recur. Talk to your doctor about whether your type of fibroid is likely to grow back.
