Raise morphology?

Postby socialite_baby » Fri Apr 01, 2011 10:47 am

DH's SA results came back normal, but according to the Kruger method his count is low (32 mil) and so is his morph (8%). Supposedly according to Kruger you can't get pregnant naturally if DH is lacking in any area. I don't quite believe that, but I'd love to raise DH's morph! Would you think antioxidants like vitamin E or pycnogenol would help? He's quitting smoking which I believe will help both, but in the mean time I'd like to give him a boost!

If his strict Kruger morphology was 8% that's actually not bad. According to my RE, they look at anything over 4% to be considered in the normal range. My DF's was only 1%. He was put on a few additional vitamins (I think Vit D and something else I forget). But, we did an IUI and we got pregnant on the first try.

GL to you!~

It said anything over 4% is normal, but I've read it needs to be closer to 12% to naturally get pregnant. I'm sure our RE would have said something if there was anything seriously wrong or if we needed any further testing or treatments, but reading the 12% has worried me a little.

So I googled Kruger method because I was curious what the standards were and I got pics of Freddie Kruger  I just had to share.

Anyway, this is what my google search produced:

>=15% normal: Normal range - Good prognosis
5-14% normal: Sub optimal range - Prognosis is fair to good, however, the lower the percent normal, the lower the chance of successful fertilization
0-4% normal: Poor prognosis - Will usually need IVF with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)

So it looks like your DH could be better but it's not bad either.

Socialite- my DH has MFI problems and his Krueger results weren't all that great. He was referred to a urologist, and the doc said that the krueger test is pretty standard that many IF docs go by, it is by no means the end all be all. Our urologist basically said that it is a poor test that takes just a small sample of soooo many sperms our DH's have and gives a result based on that- which isn't fair. He gave an example of taking an entire US poll and just grabbing New york as the test sample.

Your Dh's results actually is pretty good. We are currently seeing an RE that believes IUI will do the trick (based on his SA results, so I've got my fingers, toes, and everything else crossed!

Good luck girl!

socialite...didn't I see a post a couple of weeks ago about your DH's SA and his motility was 90% or something and you were saying they might be too fast??? Maybe I'm confusing your post with someone elses. If i'm not ...you don't have reasons for worry...your DH is very normal!

Yes, that was me. I know the main problem isn't DH, but I'd just like to raise the morph and count to "normal" kruger standards. He's low in those areas even though it's still possible for me to get pregnant with his numbers... It's also helpful to focus on DH right now. I hate the guilt that's associated knowing I'm what's standing in the way of him becoming a father. :(

Hey Soc,

I think you guys use Rainbow light vits? I love them! They are great - I only began them less than a year ago and they are my fave. I like the mens just once because of all the B-vits.
Quiting smoking is great. If he drinks - try to limit.

(I have recently joined the endo club and noticed when I have an opps with gluten I get bloating ie inflammation. Be extra careful around your fertile time with gluten)

You guys will get there! 8)

I just went to a seminar where someone asked this question to an re. His answer was no there is nothing you can do to raise morphology but he showed us a study where a man did a semen analysis everyday for 120 days. Some days his count was 120 million and other days it was only 30 million. Long story short the re said to not read to much into semen analysis results, as long as the results are in the normal range then don't worry about the sperm count because the count and morphology and motility will always vary.

Hi there. I just wanted to let you know my DHs morph ranges between 2-3% Kruger strict (2010 WHO guidelines) and I've become pregnant naturally 4 times in 8 months with only one open tube. Yes, 3 pregnancies did not make it but so far this one seems fine.. He did have varicocele surgery last August but his morph did not improve. His urologist specializes in male fertility and he rarely sees morph over 4% normal forms these days. :)
