Post Coital test?

Postby socialite_baby » Thu Apr 07, 2011 3:32 pm

I know DH's pH is normal, but I have no idea about mine alone and ours mixed together. Is it a waste of time/money? How expensive is it if I'm paying out of pocket? Does it test for anything other than pH?

i hope someone can offer more info than i, but wanted to share our story. i started with an ob/gyn and this was one of the first few tests he did, and it showed that hubby's swimmers were really slowed down. the dr believed that an IUI would be our quick answer.....we have done 5 iui's, all medicated (with a RE), with no success. i am not sure the cost, as ours was run through insurance.
good luck finding more info!!

I've never had one, but I've heard mixed reviews about it. My doctor wasn't necessarily a fan of them, because I think newer studies have come out that show that it's not a great way to determine anything (apparently the results are not very reliable).

However, with that being said, one of my great friends had one done, and it showed that all of her DH's sperm were dead the morning after BD. Upon further testing, it showed that he had the anti-sperm antibody attached to the sperm, which makes it all but impossible to fertilize an egg. They did IVF instead.

KUP if you decide to do one!

That's basically what I'd like to know, if DH's sperm are actually still living and if it's possible I have a sperm allergy. I know our RE supposedly does one of the "strictest" semen analysis' in the country so wouldn't the anti sperm antibodies have shown up on that or can it only be found with a post coital test?

That I don't know. That might be a question you should call and ask. I did ask my doc if the sperm washing procedure for IUI (which we did 4 of) would show the antibody thing, and he said yes, b/c the sperm would be clumped together. But, Idk how much I believe that, b/c I hate my doc, lol. :)

DH's agglutination was none to minor so I would think he would be fine! I assume that's regular clumping though... I'll go ahead and double check the paperwork.

My doctor didn't really suggest one either. Since DH and I did IUI we figured we bypassed the CM issue anyway. I tend to rarely have real EWCM and believe me I check!

Anyway, like Kara said, there are mixed reivews about it. That being said, my RE's office does offer it. Without insurance coverage, I think my office charges $85 for the test. So it's not cheap but it's not outrageously expensive. I would imagine other places have similar prices.

As for you have some sort of semen/sperm allergy - unless you have adverse reactions after sex with your DH I doubt you've got that. I saw an episode of that show on TLC (or something) called Strange Sex where the woman was allergic to her husband's sperm. She had severe reactions and sex was very painful for her. I think that sort of allergy is pretty rare.

That's not to say there aren't other issues with you going on though. Let us know if you decide to get one! I'm definitely interested

That's what I was thinking, IUI would bypass it. I googled PCT and found one woman who paid about $120 for the actual test and then $200 for the doctor fee. $320 total. Isn't IUI (actual procedure) around $300-$600 or so depending on the clinic?

I do have a burning sensation sometimes after sex, but it's usually right after AF. Sometimes it's painful and I still feel irritated the next morning while other times I notice it for a few minutes and it goes away. A sperm allergy would make sense, but like you said it's pretty rare... I just assume any pain I have after BDing is associated with endo pain, but I've always wondered about a sperm allergy.

My clinic charges $350 for the actual IUI so that $320 that one woman paid seems high. But I have seen on here how prices vary so who knows.

Are you seeing an RE right now? You could ask them for a price list. Mine gave me one on my first visit.

ETA - That $350 I pay includes the IUI and sperm washing.

My clinic charges $212 for the actual IUI, and $140 for the sperm washing. If I had an u/s on that day, I would be charged $161, but that has only happened once on the day of IUI.

I learn something new everyday! I never heard of a post-coital test. How do they test for this exactly? Now i'm interested and probably going to go to RE if this IUI cycle is a bust..

wannabmommee: for us it involved "having relations" early in the morning and then going to the clinic with in the time frame given. The dr. then took a vaginal swab and looked at it to see if the little ones were still alive and swimming or if my CM was killing them off. after i had it done, i did some research and i also found that there was mixed reviews on its usefulness.

goobermom- thanks for that info. Hmmm..that's interesting. There should be a blood test that can catch those antibodies and report it. We do so much bw already..
