went to the doctor about not being able to concieve*update*

dh and i have been ttc our second for almost a year now. with the exception of the past few months (ive basically given up) ive been using opk's to pinpoint ovulation. tried the sperm meets egg plan, and timed intercourse. ive gone through an insane amount of pregnancy tests and burned out my retinas trying to bring out a line!
finally went to the doctor about this, he did a progesterone serum blood test.
when i went back the next week he said i had ovulated, and everything is fine. Then when I said weve been trying so hard and still nothing, he points at my daughter and asks "why do you think you are infertile when you already have a child? the fact you have a child already proves you are fertile"
im confused. should he have done anything more to help me?

The fact that you have a BEAUTIFUL daughter does not mean you can't experience infertility.. secondary infertility is alot more common than we think. I feel your doctor (who obviously is not an expert) should refer you to a specialist or an RE that can run more extensive tests. You never know, it could be something very simple!

Best of luck to you!

I have a DS who is 7, DH and I started TTC when he was 1. It took us 6 years and IVF to get pregnant. Secondary infertility is a big deal. I would ask for more tests...I ovulated on my own also, DH had no issues. We were unexplained. Its very frusterating but you've got to be persistant! GL and I hope you get some answers!

You said you've been trying for almost 1 year, that's probably the problem. Most doctors won't do anything until you have been trying for over 1 year. I went at 10 months and they just told me to keep trying and it will happen. I had to try 2 more years before a doctor would take me seriously. Sounds like you need a new doctor for starters cause it sounds like this one knows nothing about secondary infertility. How many months have you been trying exactly?

Your doctor definitely should have helped you out more! Sounds like he wasn't very educated, or maybe just lazy...? What kind of doctor did you go to? Did you go to a Reproductive Endocrinologist (or RE)? An OBGYN or general practitioner won't really cut it, most of the time.

So I say get to an RE, and if that doc you spoke of *is* an RE, I would find a new one! I hope you get some answers soon!

it was my GP. i cant get into a specialist without him writing a refferal.
this cycle is 12 months, and 10 months charting and using opks.
i am only young, but the longer it takes the wider the gap between my children and like many, i really wanted by children close in age so they can grow up together.
next month ill make another appointment with a different GP and hope he will write a refferal to a specialist. im in australia so not sure if we have RE's here. but we do have gynocologists, will they be able to help? thanks guys

Some GYN do fertility testing and can at least see that you are ovulating. My GYN will even do IUIs. I was 21 when I started TTC #2 and here I am 27, finally pregnant. So don't let them tell you that you are still young! I wish I had pushed more in the beginning! Of course I wouldn't change how things have turned out, easy for me to say now but it was very difficult.

I went to my GP first after 8 mo of trying and she told me that she could not write a referral until we tried for over a year. I decided 3 months afterwards to make an appt with an OBGYN and she ran the CD3 blood work right away.

It turns out I have Overactive Thyroid, after my doctor saw those results she gave me a referral to and endocrinologist as well as a fertility specialist. So, I would suggest you see an OBGYN. He/She is more likely to help..GL!

Wow, that was a really crappy thing for the doc to say! They should definitely do more for you. Hopefully you either get pregnant very soon or get some answers! :hugs: Good luck!

:( Your doctor should definitely have done more for you! Some doctors do want you to wait a full year, but it's not like that's a hard and fast rule. Sometimes, the problem can be as simple as mucus blocking your falopian tubes, which can be cleared out by the HSG they perform to look at the problem. Even if your doctor doesn't think you're ready for actual fertility medications, running the tests can't hurt anything. They can at least tell you if there's a mechanical problem or hormonal problem that can be easily fixed! Good luck!!

ive just looked at the calender and its actually 13 months this cycle.
im SO upset at the moment, and i dont even have a right to be.
my neighbour has only been trying for 6 months (same age as me) and her gp has run tests, shes had an ultrasound, and is on meds and everything and shes only been trying for 6 months (sopposedly). i know i dont have any right to be upset but i still am.
im so confused, as we go for runs together all the time and im ALWAYS talking about how were trying to have another baby, and shes ALWAYS telling me about how she wants to move to a larger city, get a new career, and live all around the world with her toddler while hes still young, and then settle down when he has to go to school. she also told me only about 3 months ago that she isnt even going to try to get pregnant until she loses 10 kilos (20 pounds). shes either been keeping the fact shes trying from me for 6 months or she hasnt even been trying for that long. im pretty sure she hasnt even tried half the things i do EVERY month- chart/temp with fertility friend, opk's, herbal teas, preseed, sperm meets egg plan every other month, and all the silly things like holding my legs up for an hour after bd, and taking so many pregnancy tests that ive had to start buying them in batches!! ive even now tried taking a "break" from everything and just letting it happen like everyone tells me to. doesnt. work.
i have no right to be upset. but i still am.
ive made an appointment for next friday with another GP. hopefully she will be a little more helpful.
thanks for putting up with my whinging everyone.

Alyce Im in Australia too. For years whenever I would go to my GP they would ask if we wanted kids and id say we had been trying and the GP wpuld say we need to do testing, but they never tested for anything. DH and I weren't too bothered as we had gotten pregnant on our own and assumed it was just taking a while (theres only a 20% chance each month according to online research i have done).

then in May last year Id had enough and went in specifically for testing and she did blood tests and found nothing wrong so referred me to a gynocologist who did some more blood tests and a semen test for DH. They were fine so she did a laparoscopy, hysteroscopy and dye work (all under anasthetic) and found my tubes were both blocked.

so she referred me to IVF specialist (I assume these are the same as RE in USA??) When I saw the IVF guy he said that he wouldn't do further testing as the blocked tubes can't be gotten around and IVF was the only chance we had..So I would assume if the gyno didn't find the blockage there would be even more tests to be done.

So our timeline to get from GP to treatment was may to december. Im in rural victoria, but if you are near a city Im sure you will be able to be seen quicker. Hope that helps!

Hope your new GP is a bit more proactive!!
