We just found out DH has antisperm antibodies (ASA) - basically, the sperm have come into contact with his immune system in some way which is attacking the sperm. We've been doing a lot of research into it and it turns out that the ASA come and go (we didn't discover he had them until his 3rd s/a). If your DH has been tested, but wasn't checked for ASA, it's possible that this could be happening to you too! From what I've read, the testing for ASA is not commonly done - apparently some doctors don't put much stock into it, but if your DH's motility has ever been even slightly low, it could be worth getting him checked as the ASA directly affect motility.

HTH someone out there.

What is defined as slightly low motility? I think DH had motility of 51, but he had a sample where just didn't move at all, but there were only 1.5 million sperm

Normal motility is over 50%, if I remember right. Sperm counts can really vary. DH's counts were 40 million, 9 million (with 2.5 million making it through the swim up) and 33 million (with the ASA and only 199,000 making it through the swim-up.

My DH's motility for his first SA in March was 91%, but for our IUI on Thursday it was only 47%. Though before his first SA I did have him drink coffee 30 minutes before and I didn't this time so I don't know if that had anything to do with it... We only had 1.7 million healthy for the actual insemination after washing. ASA might make sense why his count/motility dropped so dramatically in just 4 months and he didn't do anything differently except quit smoking in May!

What's the treatment for it?

Hi socialite. That's the trick - the treatment is kind of hardcore...we've read about steroids and also drugs that basically knock out your immune system, so the immune system stops attacking the sperm, but you are susceptible to many other things since your immune system is down. DH is going back to his urologist in August to talk about the new results, so I might have more answers then.

Meg... as sorry as I am to hear this, I'm so happy that you at least have an answer now!

My friend on here and IRL, her husband has antisperm antibodies. They were able to conceive with IVF, although it did end in a m/c (which had nothing to do w/ the ASA).

PS - I need to get on FB and respond to your last message! But I hope we are still on for lunch next Monday! :)

Hi Kara! I forgot she and her DH were dealing with ASA. Answers are good, you're absolutely right. I'm just having a hard time getting used to the idea of IVF. Yes, we're still on for lunch!

My sister just told me that she has a neighbor who had ASA and they have naturally conceived 3 children. I think my sister said her neighbor had a medication she took which fought the antibodies...? Anyways, sounds like there's hope out there!

DH went back to the urologist yesterday, and he gave him a Rx for Prednisone - a steroid, that he has to take for 4 weeks. It will knock out his immune system, but hopefully get rid of the antibodies (it may or may not work...we'll see). He's going to start taking it this weekend, and will have another s/a done after he's done taking the med, so I'll update you all when we get the results!
