Morphology in males - does anyone know much about this?

Postby ckcoleing » Tue Aug 16, 2011 12:58 pm

Hi there,

My DH has 9% morphology. His motility is fine, but apparantly my doctor told me that an avergae morphology should be 15%, and his is 9% - does anyone know what Morphology actually is ??

Hope someone can help :-)

Thankyou in advance

Morphology refers to the shape characteristics of the sperm.
Abnormaly shaped sperm are less likely to fertilize an egg.
However I think out of the 3 parameters (motility, morphology and count) morphology is the less worisome. There is still a good chance to get pregnant with high count and motility even when morphology is on the low side.
Another thing would be the criteria they used. Some criteria (Kruger for instance) are so strict that 4% morphology is actually considered normal.

Good luck to you!

Hi Aleena,

Wow - thankyou for this insight, so helpful :-)
Mine has 9% morphology, and our GYNO told us that an average male should have 15%.... but that his Motility was fine. So fingers crossed.
I am on the 2nd round of Clomid 100mg... and it didnt work last month even though I produced 2 eggs in 1 ovary (nothing in other), and both were released, I ovulated normally AND my progesterone level was a great 76.4 - which is supposed to be good. So... im now worried it may be down to the morphology... as everything seemed so perfect? It is only my 2nd month at the mo, but we'll see.

What is your story Aleena? :-) Cheryl xx
