Canadian's undergoing fertility treatments?

Postby queenypink » Fri Jun 06, 2014 10:34 pm

I'm wondering if there are any fellow Canadian's going through fertility treatments (IUI or IVF) that have managed to find some magical source of funding to help with the astronomical costs.

I live in BC - I know in Quebec (I think Ontario now too?) they cover IVF now (one embryo), but definitely not here on the West end. I have tried to even seek assistance due to my past medical treatments which certainly are affecting things - Nope. There's nothing that I can find.

Has anyone else heard of any godsends?

Hey Queeny

I don't have any answers for you but didn't want to read and run. I am a fellow Canadian in Regina, Saskatchewan. Based on my limited research it seems it pays to shop around as every clinic has different prices and different success rates. We aren't planning on doing IVF but were going to an IUI last May when we got our first BFP on our own (ending in a M/C during week 6). Now that we know we are able to get pregnant on our own we aren't rushing back to the fertility clinic right away and are giving ourselves at least a cycle or 2 on our own. We have to travel to Saskatoon to do the IUI with 24 hours notice if we decide to go ahead with it. The cost is $350 at the Aurora clinic ( drugs not included)

I have friends that did 2 rounds of IVF in Victoria at the cost of $8000/each. It was cheaper than Calgary which is why they chose to go there instead. Is travelling an option for you?

Hi Orangecat, thank you so much for the reply...

Actually, you raise an incredible point that I never considered. I suppose it would be possible to travel, and I will definitely look into that as an option.

Currently, IUI for me is 500 bucks (350 for the procedure, plus 150 of monitoring). Its not crazy, but it looks like hubby and I are in for the IUI longhaul before we decide it's time to move to IVF. All IUI's are unmedicated, so we need to find our patient pants.

I will totally shop around, and will start with Calgary... that's not too too far away. Even Ontario - very far - but at least we have family there.

Thanks so much for the valuable insights!

For sure!

In Saskatchewan we don't pay for monitoring either just so you know so if you can find an RE that doesn't charge for that....
Also Saskatchewan is on the way to free IVF as it is costing the healthcare system way more money dealing with multiples after birth and if IVF was Government controlled they would only implant 1 embryo at a time at a far cheaper cost to the tax payers than a week's stay in NICU for twins. It is still a ways off into the future but will hopefully benefit many women:)

I only know of Generations of Hope in Alberta. Not too sure if it is exclusive to RFP or not though. Calgary has one of the highest success rates however take it with a grain of salt. The stats aren't updated often enough and a lot of ladies complain about the bedside manner and way in which patients and appts are handled.
