HSG?

Postby bluenoser » Wed Jan 21, 2015 2:12 pm

My Dr advised me today I'll need an HSG. Have any of you been through this? What was your experience? Were you able to get pregnant?

Ant input would be appreciated!

I'm pretty sure an HSG is a standard procedure for anyone going through fertility treatments. Testing for blocked tubes, that sort of thing - and totally beneficial!

I've had one, and my experience was not fun. It definitely hurt - but as soon as it was over (it's a pretty quick procedure) the pain was instantly gone. And I'm so glad I had it! I found out my tubes were open, and I would get it done in a heart beat if I had to again because the information that it gives your docs is so valuable.

I've also heard that it can increase fertility for up to three months afterwards since it tends to 'flush' some women out. For me that didn't happen, but it certainly is a possibility.

Good luck!

Hi, I just had my first ever HSG yesterday! Honestly, it wasn't bad. The beginning of the procedure felt like getting a pap. The technician was experienced though so that might have helped. I had a nurse by my side who was talking to me, asking questions so I wouldn't be so focused on what the tech was doing but the tech was explaining each process she was doing so I wouldn't be scared. The whole procedure probably takes 10 minutes. The tech was probably doing the insertion and prep which took like 3-4 minutes and then you just lay there while they take pictures with the x-ray machine. That probably took another 3-4 minutes. After that, the dr showed me one of the xrays and said everything looks good, no blocks and that was it. You'll definitely need a pad after the procedure. This was provided for me in the changing room as you'll be leaking dye and there will be some bleeding. I'm actually still spotting from the procedure but they said after 24 hours, you can start BD. I had very mild cramps after it, almost like a murmur and they recommended I take tylenol or advil an hour beforehand so maybe that helps too. I was also put on antibiotics the night before to prevent infection. The nurse told me 90% of women say that it is painless and usually they'll ask, that's it? and honestly, that was my experience.

Like queenypink says, it was worth it to know that nothing was wrong. My tubes are clear and the tech, and my dr said people usually get pregnant after an HSG so that was a lot of different folks telling me that. I can't tell you the chances of getting pregnant after it but I am hopeful! We are dealing with a morphology issue but I hope that this process makes his good spermies have an easier time reaching the egg!

Sorry for the late response.

I have to wait for my HSG. The hospital only does them on Mondays, and since they have to be done within 3 days of the end of my period the timing didn't work this time.

With them only doing them on Mondays it could be months before the timing lines up, which is frustrating. Until he can see what's going on in there he's not willing to prescribe more clomid, or have dh tested. So basically we're in a waiting game until the timing lines up so I can have the HSG.

I just had an HSG test performed on Friday 2/13 which was CD9 for me. The whole process was pretty quick and aside from a few pricks of pain, totally bearable. When the dye was passed through, there were menstrual-like cramps but mine are typically debilitating, so this was a walk in the park. Doc said everything was clear and I'm rocking a picture perfect uterus. ;) I am starting the BD this week (should O in the next couple days) and I'm hoping that the HSG provided some aid in flushing out any extra debris. I'm not banking on it but it would be a nice surprise. The consensus with my over-reading the web is those who have more blockages felt more pain during the procedure. The worst for me was having the catheter inserted and it really was a sharp prick of pain and that was that. Good luck! If anything, the procedure may answer some questions and if not, the therapeutic cleanse could be beneficial.

Sorry to hear you've had to postpone your HSG. I had mine in Aug 2014. Due to my sensativity/tenderness internally, the procedure was uncomfortable for me. I only had a bit of spotting afterward, but I also had some cramping and strong pain in my right shoulder. I hope this helps, and I hope you're able to get in for your HSG soon.
