SA looks really bad...can anyone help

Postby LunaWop » Mon Jun 15, 2015 5:54 am

Hello everyone,

I have been away from the forum for a few months, trying to relax and don't stress out this much about the whole ttc business.

Problem is, DH had the results of his SA last week, and the definitely do NOT look good.

Volume 5mls (2.0mls or more)
pH 7.8 (7.2 or more)
Density: 1.8 10^6/mL (20mls/mL or more)
Count: 9 10^6 (40mls or more)
Morpholohy 2% (15% normal forms or more)

Rapid progressive: 19%
Slow progressive: 12%
Non progressive: 21%
Non motile: 48%

He spoke to the GP when he got the results back, but they were completely unhelpful, and even mis-read the parameters (they thought count was supposed to be >20m rather than >40m  ). DH will try to see a different doctor, but in the meantime we are trying to work out what our realistic options will be...

Can anyone help? Should we try to go to IVF directly, or is it worth trying IUI (I guess natural is a waste of eggs?).

Also, the NHS (I am in the UK) states that there should be 2 years of trying unsuccessfully before they fund IVF, unless the tests suggest there is little chance of natural conception...does anyone know what it takes for them to accept that there is a problem? Or is the choice really about waiting or going private?

Thank you so much!

I don't have personal experience but I've heard first hand from friends Ttc with sperm issues that a major change in lifestyle helped. My sis & her husband for one had terrible time getting Preggo because of male factor but he buckled down and started exercising regularly, ate only whole foods and nothing processed, took s high quality multi vitamin, lost 40lbs, and went back in for another follow up SA 3 months after his first. Before the results even came back (which were a major improvement) she was pregnant :)

I would say try a more natural approach to fix the issue before you panic about iui or IVF. Male factor is relatively simpler to resolve unlike female!! It'll be ok, just breathe and take it one step at a time.

Thanks Artemis...

I guess my worry is that DH is already fit, he's not overweight (if he lost anything more than 10-15lb he'd end up underweight!!!!), exercises regularly, has never smoked, hardly drinks...We had both been taking vitamins for a month before the SA.

On the other hand he does have a single testicle (was born without one) so we knew from the start that there might be issues on that front...

He will go for a second SA in a month or so, but given his medical record I am not sure there is too much we can do...

I would say looking at your results it is not as bad as it could be. I certainly don't think you will be eligible for IVF on those results unfortunately.

You might be able to see from my signature my DH also has only 3% with normal morphology and 20% with progressive motility. I have actually been told by two different gynae's this is not that bad. We have managed to get pregnant twice in the past 6 months and for me the timing is key. I would recommend SMEP for low motility and morphology because you are flooding the egg with more sperm.
