Advice for A Woman Just Crossing over from General TTC

Postby bumblebee88 » Wed Aug 30, 2017 7:33 am

Hi Ladies,

My husband and I have been TTC for 16 months, and I feel I finally have to admit we belong here.

I am only 23 years old. My husband is 25. We are very healthy people with no in-your-face signs that would make anyone think we may have issues getting pregnant. I'm finally convinced it's worth the money to see a specialist.

Does anyone have any advice for us? Maybe things you wish you would've known going into this chapter?

Also, I have a few questions:

Did you need to wait for a referral from an OBGYN? I have my annual exam in about a month.

How did you guys choose the right specialist?

What happened at your first few appointments?

What type of costs should I be prepared for?

And finally, what do you do to keep your sanity? I have been struggled with this as of late. I get very triggered by pregnancy announcements. During this journey, I have watched pregnant moms give birth, have special moments with their babies, and get pregnant AGAIN. One is due with #2 in 3 weeks. I am facing the tough reality that I may see #3 before I see my #1. Everyone else I know seems to get pregnant at the snap of their fingers.

I don't have answers for you, but I'm following along to hear what others have to say because we're in a similar place. I've lost 2 babies in the last year, and while it could just be a coincidence, my OBGYN said he'd refer me to an RE if I wanted. We are trying for one more pregnancy first. If I lose it, then we'll know we need the specialist. My son came to us easily last time, so this is a whole new world for me. I hope you get some good answers here!

Trying to conceive can be such a difficult journey especially when dealing with a potential infertility problem, both you and your partner are very young, these 16cycles have you had well timed sex?
Are you cycles regular?Any signs of pcos?!
These sort of questions a doctor will ask and depending on the doctor you might even get a scan to check ur ovaries, uterus, uterus lining. You will have to have some cd2-3 tests done to check ur thyroid,LH,FSH ,E2,prolactin,progesterone,and maybe an hsg to check ur tubes and ur partner a semen analysis, these are the first steps to getting your self checked,as for the price i have no idea,i payed for all my procedures but I'm in Europe.
I know in some cases you need a referral,as for choosing the "right " one well this one is hard bcs what works for me might not work for someone else and etc ,i went to a few fertility specialists before choosing one,all highly rated but i didn't felt that special thing,it might sound silly but that is what i felt.
Dealing with pregnancy announcements is haaard and there is no right or wrong way dealing with that,i avoided situations like that.
I don't know what else to say,i have plenty of experience but I'm hoping you won't have to hear about further investigations.
Until you get to see a doctor I would recommend in case you have not to use opks and try the SMEP plan to give your self a better chance,if you Google it you will read lots of success stories,im not sure what else i could add.
Good luck and i hope you get ur bfp really soon.

Welcome bumble!

Just saw a friend get pregnant with NUMBER FOUR before my number 1, so I feel you!

You do not need a referral to see your OB. He/She will ask you questions about your cycles and then provide insight on next steps.
For me, she put me on 3 rounds of Clomid, when that didn't work, she referred me to a Reproductive Endocrinologist for testing.
I did NOT need a referred for my RE, so if you have the option to start there first, I would. They will do blood work, ultrasound AKA "Day 3 Testing"

Second what Dana says! Try to chart and use OPKs, check your cervix and all that jazz so that you can provide the doc with details on your cycles.

GOOD LUCK! This journey is hard and I want to cry daily, but my little bean will be here.... one day.

Thank you everyone for the responses!

My OB appointment is near the end of October now (they rescheduled ughh).

As of now, there is just no explanation. My big fear is to go through everything all to get diagnosed with unexplained infertility.

I have thyroid disease, but my GP is like invested in me getting pregnant haha. She has been monitoring it every 3 months to make sure my levels stay optimal. She also did a full metabolic panel to check my hormones, and my levels were all normal. I don't have a clue why we're infertile!

From the beginning, I used CM and CP checks to time sex. I get strong PMS so I can always tell when the turn happens in my cycle. I used OPKs for several months, which confirmed what I already feel. They were blaringly positive for 2-3 days. I tried preseed one month but my husband hated it. I tried vitex for 3 months. I tried temping for 2 months but had a hard time being consistent. If there is a natural method, I've probably done it.

My emotions are all over the place. Nobody I know has been through this. My parents had 2 surprises and 1 planned baby that was conceived the first cycle trying. They are giving the generic advices: "don't try or else it wont happen" "relax" "have lots of sex" etc.

I really think I can benefit from talking to people who get it.

I am pretty new to these boards myself and I can tell you they do help!!
I am in a really similar situation, 26 myself, and DH just turned 27. We have been TTC for 2 years!!!!!! It's maddening sometimes. I am literally in the best shape of my life and still no baby. Finally DH came to the realization that maybe something was wrong on his end. I honestly thought to myself "it'll be a quick fix - he will go, do semen analysis, they will confirm yes something is wrong but here's a pill to fix it!" Little did I know!! DH semen analysis came back with sperm count less than 0.5 MILLION - and of those 0.5 he does have they all have issues! Bad morphology, penetration, pH, etc. It was totally devastating for BOTH OF US!

So absolute best advice, no matter the outcome of any results you get from the doctor, on either of you guys, you can overcome it working together, but that's the only way you're going to do it! We both want a baby more than anything in this world, but I didn't marry DH for his sperm, I married him for him, and at the end of the day if it were me, I wouldn't want him to give up on my baby making abilities.
I can guarantee you're going to lose your sanity in this process, but if you lose it together it totally doesn't matter.

If you haven't spoke to your gyno about ttc yet, do so already. I have been charting my fertilility since I was your age and listened to everyone around me say "relax when the time is right it will happen" and wasted another 7 years waiting for the right time to happen before I started seeing a doctor for help. Wish someone had told me to go get help years ago. Instead everyone told me to wait. I've been waiting forever. Good luck.

i am just about to enbark on this journey myself. im 31 my husband is 34 TTC on and off for about 2 years.

ive been seeing my OBGYN for the past 2 years on keeping it au natural, Finally decided that we need to start seeing whats happening but to my dismay my OBGYN office no longer partakes in fertility programs so i need to go elsewhere.

we are going to start with a seman analysis which my husband needs to request to a Primary Care physician, once we have the results of that we will go to the fertility clinic near us to get a consult on next steps.

My OB always said to me make sure he gets tested before you do because the seman analysis is so much cheaper than all the test the women has to endure. would love to keep this thread open to discuss progress etc.

i too feel your pain in the past 3 weeks ive already seen 4 pregnancy announcement 2 of which was close family... im the last of everyone who hasnt jumped on the kid train... and it does get disheartening at times.
