Interesting article about losing weight while pregnant......

Postby Ready4BabyN09 » Tue Jan 06, 2009 11:52 am

I just started WW again yesterday after gaining back all but 5 lbs of the 75 lbs I lost in 2005. I am not pregnant yet, but plan to stick with WW (maybe the plan for nursing mom's) when I become pregnant. I hope my doctor will agree with this. Here is an interesting article I found on the topic. This doctor thinks that if your BMI is over 35 that moderate weight loss and exercise during pregnancy is beneficial.

very interesting! ive always noticed that heavier women tended to not gain as much during pregnancy. i think with simple modifactions modifications of their diet (not going on a diet) theyd be able to stay teh same or lose weight no problem. without risking the healthy of the baby

When I was pregnant w/my second child I asked my doctor if I ate 1800 calories if that would be okay. He said that was perfectly fine...so that is what I plan to do when I get pregnant in a few months :D I made a deal w/everyone worried about me to lose 40 lbs by the time I start trying to get preg so I'm down 7lbs and plan on ttc in August and September continuing to eat 1500 calories and exercising until prob 3 mos preg and then I will start eating the 1800 calories.

I've got to admit I've wondered if it's really a good idea. This is nothing scientific here, just something I observed. When my mom was pregnant with my brother she had gestational diabetes and was put on a special diet where she actually lost weight during the pregnancy. My brother turned out to be super thin and is one of those people who is all bones and can't gain up to a normal weight no matter how hard he tries. No one else in the family is like this so it's not something genetic. I've always wondered did the fact that my mom lost weight during pregnancy somehow set him up to be like this? Did it somehow set up the biochemical signal that you are being born into famine so you'd better get by on as few calories as possible by being very thin? Not being able to gain sounds great, but if you are too thin I think that is just as hard to deal with as being overweight.

Everything I've read states the opposite. Restricting during pregnancy could cause the baby to have trouble losing weight as a child/adult. :dunno:
It would slow down his metabolism, not speed it up.

I lost weight with both of my successful pregnancies. I was overweight (borderline obese) during both. I did not restrict myself in any way, but I didn't gorge myself using the eating for 2 thing as an excuse. I just ate healthier items to nourish my babies. My metabolism was naturally higher while pregnant so naturally I lost a few pounds. Both of my babies were perfectly healthy, though my daughter was 7 weeks premature (not related to my weight loss)
