I've been wanting to lose some weight for awhile now... Nothing serious or drastic. I'm 5'7 and weigh about 140 (highest weight ever) and I'm a size 4. I'd love to be a size 2 and weigh 120 again, but I'm perfectly happy with being a 4! More curves!

Well, I'm 2 dpo today and completely bloated which could be why I'm getting so desperate to lose weight now. I didn't get a job until February of this year when DH's work started slowing down (he's a new home electrician). I figured I'd lose all of my "newlywed 9" which was actually more like newlywed 19 or 20! I've maybe shed 3 pounds since I started being more active at work, but I'm not happy with it.

I'm on my feet walking for 5 1/2 hours a day at work, I eat a Special K 180 calorie bar for lunch, and have a normal size breakfast and dinner.

Occasionally I'll lift weights with soup cans. They're about a pound an a half so it's better than nothing, right? I also try to do 100-200 sit ups every other day, but at least 50 a day.

What am I doing wrong? Why can't I shed a few more pounds? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! :) Thanks in advance!

I've been using myfitnesspal.com. I like it so far and I'm pretty good about using it everyday... It says I should be having about 1,100 calories a day. I usually get anywhere from 1,000-1,200 a day plus the exercise. I just don't know why the weight isn't falling off as fast as it used to!

You can actually gain weight by not eating enough.. or having a poorly balanced diet. If you're walking for 51/2 hours a day and only eating 180 calories mid day, you're not getting enough nutrients.

Your body responds to having too few calories by going into "starvation mode". Your brain will tell your body to store fats away while it's getting food, so there's a back up for later.

I weigh 145 pounds, and I'm 5'5"... I'm also a landscaper so I work quite hard, and have a fair bit of muscle on my frame. With my height and weight, I need to consume a minimum of 1400 calories a day just to cover regular body functions (so to just sit all day and do nothing).

For all the exercise you do, you should compensate your body with the necessary calories to complete the task. You just have to find out how man calories are burned doing your particular task.

The biggest mistake people make is by looking at calories as being their enemy, but really it's only a measure of fuel for your body. It's bad fats, sugar substitutes, bad cholesterol, salt, and processed sugars that are the problem.

My advice: eat lots of veggies (6-7 servings), at least 2 servings of lean protein, 2 servings of dairy, and around 5 servings of whole grains per day. And try to eat more early in the day, so your body has all day to burn it off.

Oh, and try to avoid eating gimicky processed foods like the special K bar. Fresh foods are the way to go!

P.S. I've lost 45 pounds by making these changes in my diet, and so far the weight has stayed off for 3 years.

Good Luck!!

saracrabb - Thank you so much! I've been struggling with eating issues for 5 years now and I don't want to go back into that world! It was probably what messed with my metabolism a bit... I'm trying to do it the healthy way this time!

I know the Special K bars are horrible for me! I work in a restaurant though so I figure it's a little bit healthier than the high fat, high calorie foods that the restaurant has to offer. It's between eating their food or bringing my own snack because I don't get a break for lunch unless I eat their food. Silly, huh?

DH and I haven't had fresh fruits and veggies in our apartment since we got married so we'll definitely have to get some in here this week! He's trying to lose some weight too so I don't have to go through it alone!

Thank you again! :)

No problem! I used to work in a pub so I know exactly what you mean! It's horrible :P Thankfully I worked with nice cooks that made me special veggie platters, and chefs salads (yum!).

Good luck with your weight loss!

Ugh, tell me about it. I got married last September and quit smoking shortly after. Between the two my husband and I both put on some unwanted lbs. We stuck to a diet before the wedding so we looked good and as soon as the wedding was over we felt like we deserved to binge, lol. We both love to cook as well so that doesn't help, but i've found some really healthy recipes that are so good. If you want I could share them. Also, i'm trying the 30 day shred (we have a topic somewhere on here), I really like it so far.

from all the healthy diets i have read . this is what they say take you weight and multiple by 10 so 140x10 1400 is the calories you need to loss and add i think 500 to stay the same . and they also say that pregnant women only need about 400 more calories a day they say most pg women over eat . and ever thing i have read said no one should ever go below 1200 a day. hope that helps

Good news, I'm down to 134! That's 6 pounds lost! I haven't been eating out so much and have been eating healthier (fruits, veggies, lean protein).

Good Going!
I find eating primarily healthy allows me to eat whatever I want basically - if I want cake or chips its ok as most of what I eat is good for me...
I eat lots of salads with dark greens, homemade soups, lean meat and healthy grains. Buckwheat is common is Russia and is really yummy!
Luckily for me I like what I eat - I don't feel like I am depriving myself by eating healthy - it tastes good!
Plus I am hyperactive and love walking - easier in a city - tho horrible air pollution here...
In the US I once lived near a high school and used to walk the track to unwind and think....

Yay, congratulations!!! Keep it up :D

Are you still quitting smoking? If so, are you finding it hard to diet at the same time? How are you dealing with that?

I'm actually finding it easier to stop smoking while dieting... I used to eat and then smoke, but when my stomach isn't as full as I used to fill it I don't feel the need to smoke right after.

I'm still not 100% smoke free, but I'm getting closer. DH agreed to stop with me so I'll have even more support!
