Ovulation Prediction Kits

Postby peppersta » Mon Mar 21, 2011 9:30 am

Hey Everyone,

So up to now I haven't been using ovulation prediction kits, but I decided to start for this cycle. I bought a "First Response" kit with 7 tests in it. Does anyone have experience with this brand or have any suggestions/advice/tips??? I don't think I'm ready to commit to the digital monitor yet as it seems pretty expensive.

What time of day is best to use them? I was thinking first morning urine!

Thanks!

Hey!! That's a really good question. I actually don't use OPKs but I've seen and heard enough about them that I think I can answer your question (anyone else reading this feel free to correct me if I'm wrong :) ) But I think it's best to test in the afternoon like around 2. I'm not exactly sure what the reason is for that, I think it has something to do with when that hormone is more potent in your body and your surge. Maybe I wasn't the best person to answer. Hopefully someone else might come a long and enlighten us both. You might want to try posting this in the pee stick forum. There's a lot of experts over there!! :) Good luck!!

thanks for the reply..... I do know that you're not supposed to pee for at least 2 hours before you test and not drink much water so that the hormone is pretty concentrated. I will post again on the poas page but I'm thinking now that I will pee after work (around 4pm) after not peeing or drinking since lunch time.

Hi, Iv been using opks's for around 3 months and i have found them fantastic and alot easier than taking my temp every morning!!After doing some research on the internet and some experimenting of my own, here is what I know-

*Everyone says the best time to test is around 2pm but just to be sure i dont miss the big O i also test at 7pm- the same times everyday- I set the alarm on my phone to remind me to stop drinking 2hrs before hand.

*Start using the tests 5 days after the day of your last period

* A BIG tip......buy cheap opks in bulk online (pack of 30-50), you can pick them up for around 80cents each from Amazon ect...I have a cupboard full of them and at least 10 floating around in my handbag lol!

*Once you get two lines on your internet cheapie opk- just confirm it with more expensive brand opk, Iv found Clear Blue Digital to be great- i think you can get cheap internet refils for these also.

Hope this helps and good luck :bfp: :D

So it's day 19 of my 26 day cycle and no positive opk yet. I tested from day 9 on and I didn't even get a line that was lighter than the test line :( I hope that I am ovulating. We stopped using the tests yesterday because we ran out......but have been bd-ing every other day so hopefully I did ovulate and we bd on the right day and I just missed it on the pee test.

I always used the generic little strips either from online or walmart/big lots, etc... They come in almost like a photo tube and there are enough to test every day of your cycle so you know you don't miss it. DH and I are talking about TTC #2 and I will be using the same, I really think that made a diff!!! But I always did mine first thing in the morning!?

OPK kits

Postby jnhillard » Tue Apr 12, 2011 1:53 pm

I usually use mine later in the day, it says not to use first morning urine. And a little tip, I buy mine off of http://www.early-pregnancy-tests.com because they are cheaper & come in little sleeves. I was buying the kit in the store, but they had to be tossed after a month and I never needed to use them all. If you don't know when you ovulate I would start testing at day 9 or so (depending on your cycle length because the average luteal phase *from ovulation to AF* is 12-16 days).

Also, I think if you BD every day other day it should be ok :-)

Hope this helps!

I know you aren't supposed to use FMU, but I always do and I have always caught my surge. I'm not worried about a false positive, because my negative are SO negative and my positive SO positive. They say the best time is between 2-5 or 7-10. Also, now that I've gotten a handle on my cycle, I try to BD every other day the whole week before O, in case I get a positive OPK early, because they also say its best to BD the day BEFORE your positive OPK and then the subsequent days. Whatever time you test, its important to do it the same time everyday, and hold your urine and not drink very much for a few hours before.

Some people test twice a day, I personally can't afford to do that! Too pricey!
