Statistics Scare Me

Postby OCD2ww » Tue Aug 05, 2014 5:24 pm

Hello,

I'm 32 and currently TTC my second child. I found this calculator, and the results really got me down  : http://www.countdowntopregnancy.com/too ... ulator.php

I looked at the results, and now I'm a little depressed. First, I didn't think fertility dipped much until 40. Second, I think it's kind of a nasty thing to do to show statistics on miscarriage to a woman TTC :x . A 20% chance? Yikes. Third, what if it takes me a couple of years to have my second child? This kind of info is the stuff that could scare me away from having a third.

I know that this kind of information is a generalization, and the fact that I'm taking vitamins, am going to the doctor, and am charting/etc is going to increase fertility and decrease problem chances. But this is still pretty upsetting.

My question is has anyone found information that conflicts with this, especially from a more reliable source?

It's kind of heartbreaking.

Ugh. I just did mine. I'm 29, and will be 30 in 2 weeks. My chances drop from 20% at 29 to 15% at 30. And chance of miscarriage goes from 5-10% to 20%!!! What a difference a year makes. Man.... :|

Ladies,

I feel so bad. My intention was NOT to bring y'all down. Like I said, you don't know what all the calculator takes into account. Like, how many pregnancies is this based on? 40? 400? 4000? 40000? Also, it says without any intervention. A lot of us are on clomid or something similar, and I'm not sure if charting/testing for fertility is considered "medical intervention" or not. Not to mention the fact that a lot of us are trying, so we're already on vitamins, diets, etc. Obviously it doesn't take into account medical history either.

ALSO, if a woman turns 30, it doesn't mean that she magically loses 5% fertility. That's just an estimate. We're not all the same!

My point is that I think the calculator is a bunch of HOKUM!!

I understand. I just think it's nuts that even their statistics are that much different for 1 year. How when every person and pregnancy is so different!?!

Some sites say 50% mc risk (more likely before woman even knows she's preg) I've miscarried before and know tons of ladies who have, unfortunately it's just a part of life.. A crappy terrible part but it's not uncommon. The good news is there is an 80% chance when you do get preg that it's a sticky bean :)

I saw that too! What I think sucks is just because you wait to be financially stable for your future family, you end up losing % wise in conceiving! It sucks that I wanted to be in a good spot in life but lost 5% chance because I didnt wantto get pregnant in my early 20s. I'm 29 1/2 now, so that'll drop when I hit 30. :x Those who are pregnant in their 30s give me hope!

I stumbled on an article like that a few weeks ago and tried really hard not to read it or read too much in to it.
When I saw my ob/gyn last week he said not to read too much into those articles as every woman's situation is different regardless of age. I'm 34 and TTC #1 and he gave no indication as to why I shouldn't be able to get pregnant. Yes, I'm in my 30s, yes I have PCOS but otherwise I'm healthy which only plays to my favor. In fact he said he was very confident I'd be pregnant sooner than I may think.
I know those articles can be frustrating and discouraging, but try not to read too much in to them as we really don't know the factors behind how they arrived at those stats.

So maybe I'm crazy ya'll but this actually made me feel better. I just turned 31 and we are ttc #2 (my DH's first) and I have been so nervous about age, etc. But looking at this it shows that within a year there is an 85% chance I will be pregnant!

Don't despair too much, ladies! No matter what your age, there is a 20% chance of miscarriage. M/c rates are much higher than one would think!

I know this is an oldish thread but just thought I'd post a quick reply. I'm 32 (33 next monh) and was on the combined pill for more than half my life. I thought it would take ages to conceive due to stats like this (this is our first baby), but we did it on cycle 4! I hope you don't think I'm gloating - just saying try not to worry too much about statistics as everyone is different. Good luck to everyone :babydustb: :babydustg:
