Chemical vs Clinical Pregnancy

Postby agonize » Mon Sep 21, 2015 12:26 pm

Four months ago, I tested BFP on the day AF was supposed to show. I was pregnant for less than 1 week, because AF showed. I went to the doctor and was told that I had a chemical pregnancy that resulted in an early miscarriage. I was told that this happens to 70% of women and is very common.

Today, it's DPO 11 and I've just tested :bfp:, but I'm afraid to celebrate. Who knows if this is another chemical pregnancy that will end in disappointment?

So my question is: when is it safe to assume chemical pregnancy or chemical miscarriage is no longer going to be an issue? How many weeks? How long should I wait before I can truly celebrate and embrace the fact that I am really pregnant?

For me it would be once I see the heartbeat flutter, so maybe 6 weeks?

What do you mean by "heartbeat flutter"? And how does one detect this? Please explain!

I feel like all my knowledge right now only goes up and until the BFP test, haha.

I was high risk so my ob did an ultrasound to confirm pregnancy. I could see my dd's heartbeat flutter or spark on the scan. It was so cool.

Oh wow, I didn't realize that you can detect baby's heartbeat at week 6? Seems so early!

Btw, how did you know that you've got a high-risk pregnancy?

I was 5 weeks, 6 days to be exact. I was 38 and suffered a chemical pregnancy before her. Because of my age and because of my first loss he termed me high risk and monitored me very closely throughout my pregnancy. Advanced maternal age ... i.e. I'm old. lol

Oh my goodness, don't say that! You are not old! Also, I read from another post that you are onto your #2 pregnancy. So, it sounds like you are doing just fine. I'm sorry about your past miscarriages, though. Has the doctors shed light on why that has happened? I've also got a chemical pregnancy in July and I'm scared of a repeat m/c experience. :(

With my first loss my ob thought it was a progesterone issue. That seemed ok since I was able to carry my dd to term. I didn't think we'd have a problem with ttc #2 since the progesterone issue was solved. Then I had my first loss this year, unexplained. The baby just stopped growing. The second loss my RE thinks is because it didn't fully implant as they found scar tissue leftover from the February D&C. So I was hopeful this past cycle, then boom another chemical. We'll see what happens this cycle. My ob has now put me on Metformin and next cycle he'll want to try Clomid. At least there's a plan, but for now there's not really a reason per se. All my blood work keeps coming back good. Also I'm 41 now ... old lady here! lol
