Drinking Alcohol during your TWW...yay or nay?

Postby kksmom09 » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:35 pm

today at work we were discussing if drinking during your tww was bad or good, a lady at work said she drank before she found out she was pregnant and her baby was doing just fine. I would like to know what do you think, don't drink incase there's some chance this is your month or drink it up and just enjoy life?

If you are TTC it is generally advised by the medical community to avoid alcohol and tobacco. Both can decrease chances of conception and research may indicate even early exposure can be harmful.

I'm not advocating do it.. *as seen in my previous post* but she didn't know (accidental kid, ggrrr...) but if YOU know you are trying, then do not, do not drink!

I don't advocate getting hammered, but I don't see the problem with maybe having a glass of wine or a beer.

When we started TTC our 1st I didn't think it was going to happen quickly (b/c of how it could take 6 months on 'average') and I know I had a couple beers in that TWW. Plus it was right before my birthday.

Then when we were TTC our 2nd I definitely thought I was out that cycle. We BD a couple times, I just had oral surgery and it was a shitty month. So I had a couple glasses of wine, then found out I was pregnant less than a week later.

Both of my kids are perfectly fine.

I think it's up to the individual and how comfortable they feel doing it. If you are against it, then don't do it.

The way I see it is that there are so many women out there that have no clue they're pregnant and go about life normally until they're late.

I had a glass of wine or two most nights until I actually got my BFP. I've heard that it can actually help with implantation - again, you don't want to get hammered, but I'm proof positive that you can have a healthy bean at 8 weeks despite having wine on the evening of 8 DPO. I think it helped keep me from stressing about the TWW, which, well who knows? Maybe that helped, too!

I decided not to drink during tww but then I use the arrival of af as the excuse to open one of the special bottles of wine. Moët helps with the disappointment I find.

Woman smoke and drank through their entire pregnancies years ago.

It's horrible, yes-- but the point is there are many fine people out there whose parents did just that. I think it's totally fine to have a few drinks during the 2WW-- it may even help take some stress off the obsessors like myself.

I think not doing your normal thing during the 2WW can make AF coming much more devastating as you were 'acting' pregnant in vain.

I'm not telling anyone to drink, but my Dr. told me yesterday that "wine and conception go together" NO JOKE!! I asked what to avoid after IUI #2 yesterday and she said nothing, do whatever you want. Implantation can take up to 6 days so there is nothing there to hurt.

Again, I am not saying go get smashed, but a few glasses of wine wont hurt you. I specifically asked bx my Best Friend is coming in town this weekend and we have been known to put a few back, but I will be watching the amount.

Use the info how you choose. That was straight out of the Dr.s mouth!

I totally agree with Princess Spooky. I try to just live my life as normally as possible & will continue to do so until I am finally officially pregnant. All that stressing & treating myself like I am already pregnant feels especially bitter & frustrating when AF shows up again. & a doctor that isn't a teetotaling fearmongerer will tell you that the occasional drink even after you know you are pregnant is not a big deal. I have even known doctors who permitted their pregnant patients to smoke (within reason--a few cigarettes a day, not like a whole pack) while pregnant.

There are indications that you have to drink A LOT, like an entire bottle of whiskey every day for nine months, to cause significant problems with a fetus. (Although research shows that if you lack the genetic enzyme that helps break down & metabolize alcohol, you can cause damage by consuming less alcohol. This is part of why there is a higher incidence of fetal alcohol syndrome on Native American reservations. Pregnant Native American women don't necessarily drink more than other pregnant women, but Native Americans tend to lack this enzyme, so the alcohol they do drink is more destructive to their bodies, & to any embryos living inside their bodies. Asian women are also more likely to lack the enzyme.) The risks of smoking are preeclampsia--which is serious business but can be addressed through other behavioral modifications & is not a huge concern for women with normal blood pressure before pregnancy--& low birth weight. But we're not talking a two-pound baby. Maybe six pounds instead of seven.

I have no intentions to smoke or drink my way through pregnancy, & I did quit smoking altogether when I started TTC (because there are some indications it can cause poor ovarian reserve issues in women over 30), but I have no qualms about having a drink or two during the TWW if I really want one. (Which I usually do not--not a big drinker.) The embryo doesn't even implant until you're at least halfway through the TWW anyway. If it's a nice healthy embryo created by a healthy egg & healthy sperm, it is not going to be impacted by a beer or two while it's meandering through the Fallopian tube. & considering that most ladies on this board have to hold themselves back from testing starting on like 3DPO, we can mostly be assured of catching our pregnancies early & implementing any behavioral changes before we are far enough along to do too much damage.

I have to agree... well put! I like the end part as well, a healthy egg and sperm are not going to be affected by a beer or 3 in the tww. To each their own. I myself, will not be drinking once I get my BFP :bfp: but I have known ladies that have done much worse and have gone on to have healthy babies. It's not worth the risk to me, especially after all we go thru to get pregnant. I wont be partaking at all, but the day I have that baby... I am sure to have a glass of wine to celey!!!

Good luck ladies!!! xooxox

I know people who didn't know they were pg who had a few drinks and everything was fine.

personally, I think if you're actively TTC and you KNOW you're in the TWW? then alcohol shouldn't be anywhere near you're 'it's okay' list...

I am going to a casino/hotel tomorrow to celebrate my 30th bday. I will only be 4 or 5 dpo and I not going to miss out on a few birthday beers. I think it is fine to have some alcohol in the tww. :)
