OPK's with PCOS?

Postby KristinHarding » Wed Feb 15, 2017 11:02 am

I recently read that for 75% of women with PCOS that OPK's don't work. Has anyone with PCOS found this to be true? I'm curious if anyone with PCOS has ever successfully detected ovulation with an OPK...?

I have mild PCOS and use OPKs and they're accurate.

I'm currently on Femara and they still work fine for me. Best of luck to you! :)

The best way to know if you actually O however is to temp. OPKs only detect an LH surge. A lot of women with PCOS gear up to O and see a + OPK several times during a cycle so temping will let you know if and when you actually O'd.

Thank you for responding Kat. Question, what is mild PCOS? or I guess what are your symptoms that led to the diagnoses. I have been temping for a few weeks and I just feel like my numbers are ALL OVER THE BOARD! They go High to Low to High to Low and there doesn't appear to be a pattern just yet. I have my first appointment with a fertility doctor on Tues 21st, so maybe she can shed some light on my crazy body LOL

You're welcome!

My OB/Gyn came to that Dx after running blood tests and Ultrasounds and taking a look at my history.

Basically, my hormones are very PCOS but I don't have cysts on my ovaries. I was having long cycles sometimes 40+ days and I'd miss two or three periods a year. I also have the unwanted hair.

So, I'm taking metformin 500mg since October and my cycles have been 29-30 days. He also put me on Femara (for six months) to give me a stronger O since I O on my own already. If that doesn't get me pregnant, then he'll refer me to a specialist. I won't be able to afford it though so I'm hoping for a miracle.

Personally, I haven't been temping since TTC this time around. But when we were trying in 2011-2012 I tried it for a few months. Are you getting enough hours of consecutive sleep? If not that can cause temps to be everywhere. Also you have to try and take your temp around the same time every morning before you get out of bed.

Hopefully the specialist can give you some much needed answers!!! Keep me posted!! Good luck!

Praying for your miracle Kat!!

I usually am asleep by 9:30pm and up around 5am (7.5/8 hours) sometimes longer. I temp at 5-5:30am and its the first thing I grab when the alarm goes off. I hardly move, and definitely don't get up till after I temp. My temps range from a low of 96.91 to a high of 97.77, never been in the 98's. Not even during the middle of the day, my body temps run colder. This is my first month trying the OPK's and I started on Wedsnesday which would be CD11 and it was the faint test line and same with CD12. Is that normal for it to read faintly throughout the cycle and the one darker positive surge?

Kristin, I have PCOS too and this is my first month charting since I had my last child in 2012. I am also on Clomid and my Dr. told me to start taking OPKs CD 10 and I would likely ovulate sometime around CD 14-18. I had seven positive OPKs in 11 days (where the control line was clearly darker than the test). It wasn't until CD 26 that I had an instant, super positive OPK that was so dark it was almost a burgandy instead of purple. I ovulated that night, I think, according to my chart and finally saw that temp rise. FF says that it doesn't really matter if your post-O temps vary, as long as they stay above the coverline. So, if your coverline is 97.3, then you don't have to have them in the 98s. I don't think it really means anything as long as the temps are above the coverline, or slightly going up over time (that just indicates there is a good deal of progesterone, which is what is needed to sustain pregnancy initially). Hope that helps!
