Age difference between kids?

Postby booboo » Fri Jul 21, 2006 2:43 pm

Right now, We are officially on a very long break, because I am going to school and we are trying to save money. But, I am trying to plan for the future! If we start ttc in 2008, Emma will be about 3 years old when new baby is born (best case scenario ttc), or if we start in mid-late 2009, Emma will be 4-5 years old.

Do you think thats too big of an age difference? I want 3-4 kids, so really I didnt want them to be so far apart in age. However, if we wait until 2009, then hopefully we can have our next 2 babies a lot closer in age because we'll be in a better place financially.

What do you girls think? If you have a big age gap, does the older kid still play with the baby, do they help you around the house & with the baby, or do they kinda ignore the baby since they are so much older??

Hey Erica!! My DS was born when my DD was 3 1/2 years old. I didn't really "plan" it this way, it's just the way it happened, but I'm not complaining. :) I think this was the perfect age gap between MY kids. My DD was old enough to help me out and she was at the age where she LOVED it! She was potty trained which was a plus. *lol* And my kids are very, very close and they play together VERY well. I really don't think there is a magic age gap to go by. I think it will all work out for you in a way you will be pleased with. Good luck hun!

I chose three years cause 22 months was OK, 18 months was hard work, and 16 month apart was lots a hard work LOL

so we are trying for a nice 3 year gap! but it is really when you feel ready

Well IF I get pregnant this cycle, it'll be just shy of 36 months between the two kids. I think it's a great age difference as I know she'll want to help with the baby and still be close enough to want to play with her.

2 yrs..+ maybe few months, if you want them to be playmates that is..

3 years is usually to much for that... my sister was 3 yrs older and she and i didnt really play much together the age gab was to much. My 2 oldest are 2yrs and 3 monts apart and that was a great agegab, they did play a lot together and are now best friends... Hoever Ds3 had 3yrs 6 months between him and Ds3 and they never played much together..

So i would say a 2yrs + few months.. not more than 3 years.. ;p

I think that the best age difference is the difference your children happen to be when you are ready to have another baby and it happens.

My oldest two are 2 years and nine months apart. I wanted them to be closer, but I had a difficult marriage and it just didn't work out that way. In retrospect, the youngest's first year was physically exhausting and would have been so much more so if dd had been younger. She is also a rather difficult, demanding child who benefited from being an only for awhile.

There will be at least a fifteen year age difference between ds and the new baby, and I can only see advantages to that as I see how ds interacts with the children he babysits and what a fine young man he is growing up to be. The sibling
relationship between the teens and the tot will be different than between the two teens, but I do think that they will be close.

wow i see most of the posters originally here are now pregnant, horray!! congrats, i guess mother nature often decides for us. i would like the 2 year gap, but right now i'd be going past that. i guess sometimes it isn't a choice for people who are seemingly infertile like me, but hopefully soon, i wanna try to get another in before the 3 yr mark, but who knows what God has in store. i'd love to have close siblings, as i never had that.

GL to those like me, still TTC

I am new to this group- and ttc my 2nd, I ask myslelf this question all the time- We started trying when Cass was 4 months old- because we wanted our kids 1-2 yrs apart. But now if I was to be PG this month they would be almost 30 months apart.

I liked the 2 year spacing the best. I haven't liked the 3-4 spacing much the kids have a harder time playing together, and the youngest gets too spoiled (in my family that is) :o

Our daughter is 4 and will be at least 5 by the time another sibling comes into the picture. I definitely didn't want that much time in between children - but I didn't expect it to take over 2.5 years to get that second child either. lol

Well, my DD and my DS #1 are just about 7 years apart and it was not planned that way (I wasn't even on b/c pills or protection, we had some heath problems with our DD that I think psychologically kept us from conceiving) and it's tough. Even though they are different genders, my DS wants to do what my DD is doing and she can't stand it at all.

Now my boys are 21 months apart and again this was not planned... However, I have to say that this is awesome! They are each other's play mates and they are inseparable. They bunk together in the same room, they both love Thomas the Tank engine, Sponge bob and Cars; they are almost like twins (it's really freaky).

We're trying again for one more and unfortunately things haven't worked out like I wanted and my youngest and our last will be at least 3-4 years apart. I think it will make it easier for me to have my youngest that much older because he'll be potty trained (please God) and self sufficient in most of the things he does whereas when he was a baby and my middle child was just 2 it was very hard and taxing on me as a mother to have a difficult baby and a toddler at the same time. However...I wouldn't change anything and I love how close my boys are; but I will never have a 7 year age gap again... That is difficult.

My brother was born when I was 12 yrs old. We are so close and so much alike. I loved having a baby brother at that age. We have a much closer relationship than I have with my sister who is 3 yrs younger.
