I just feel compelled to post this. After my m/c, I dumped my doctor because I didn't like the way I was treated (very callous and nonchalant office staff). The following year when I got my next bfp, I found a new dr. that came highly recommended.

Called for my first appt and she got me in asap. After a thorough consultation, she ordered up the standard bloodwork. I didn't know she was going to order up a few extra tests.

THANK GOD SHE DID!

Apparently I have a clotting disorder (there are several) but mine is called Anti-phospho Lipid syndrome. I know it sounds weird and scary, but it's actually VERY common. Here and I thought I was a healthy red blooded American, who knew that I had THICK blood where one single little clot in the sac or placenta could stop a pregnancy?

At the time I went through it, there were SEVERAL women on the pregnancy boards in the high risk forum that were on blood thinner during pregnancy.

If you are having multiple m/c PLEASE get your blood checked. I started my shots at 7wks and had a healthy pregnancy.

If this helps just ONE person, it will mean everything to me.

Hi, technically all women are supposed to have those bloods run after 3 recurrent mc's so I agree with PP - make sure you insist on your rights to be screened for blod clotting disorders. Don't let them just run a basic screen. Mine came back with low protein S deficiency which is rare to have and was only found cos they ran the FULL screen.

I had 3 M/Cs and after the 3rd found out my dad has protein s deficiency (which IS hereditary). I was going to request a test for it on October 15th (my next OB appointment) and I took a PG test yesterday and I'm PG. Is it too late now? I had read that they can't test for it once you are PG. I WAS NOT trying to get PG. I haven't even had my first 'real' period of the M/C. I am so mad at myself!

hmmmm mom2wes thats a good question. I know all pg womens levels of protein s fall in pg, but if you have the protein S (they told me its a 50/50 chance of having it if only one parent has it - I asked due to my 12yo dd) then I would imagine your levels would be extremely low in pg so surely they'd be able to tell with a blood test. I'd def ask. Congrats on your pg and feel free to private message me whenever you like particularly if you do have to start clexane and aspirin.

Just click on the PREG BOARDS tab at the top of your screen, then arrow down through the different folders until you find the High Risk.

i posted on the other topic. Sorry. Didn't realize this was the sticky thread so I'm reposting.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't mind the shots. I have done 3 IVF's. So I'm a veternan now. I'm just so stressed about getting pregnant while having theese disorders. I did get the repeat done and I have lupus anticolagant for sure and the one that was in the gray area. The anticardiolin is positive after it was in the gray area it went up. I'm having a hard time dealing with it for some reason. Im wondering if I need to be on medication so I dont get a clot now. I will have to take them before I get pregnant since I have such early loses. I have an appt on October 15 with the maternal fetal medicine doctor and I just want to make sure I'll be ok while doing all this. Plus I have to do a FET which involves estrogen pills. I'm a little stress. But I'm glad this is sticky because I agree. Theese some more common then everyone thinks and like you said a simple blood test could change everything. I had 3 loses and a tubal and now I'm just finding this out. The tubal of course is not from this problem. But I wish I would have know with my last pregnancy or I could have been pregnant still. They do all this screen especially for IVF. It cost so much money and it's hard to keep doing it again. Not just the money issue of course but the emtional loss of your baby.

Thank you for posting this. I have a question, and I am not sure anyone will have an answer. I had one m/c recently and want this test done. My doctor says that insurance will not pay for it until you have more than one m/c, which of course I don't want. Any ideas on how to make this happen without more than one m/c?

I have called the insurance company, with no luck, as they need the diagnosis code, which would be for recurrent m/c.

Help? Thanks in advance.

Maybe try calling your dr to get the code....worst case scenario, pay for the blood test out of pocket. Surely it can't be too terribly expensive? I dunno for sure. Sorry I couldn't help more. Good luck and keep us posted! Sorry for your loss.

I did all of that yesterday. I am going to pay for it out of pocket, but it is a $600.00 test, just so everyone knows before asking to have it. Thank you again for the info and posting this.

I am sorry for your loss too!

I just had my second miscarriage in 4 months - the little bean passed the day before Thanksgiving. :(

My doctor kindly went ahead and ordered the blood disorder screen and the thyroid test since I was so hysterically upset. I also asked to have my insulin checked, but she shrugged that one off. She also gave me a script for Xanax and an anti-depressant. :/

Well...I have a clotting disorder! I have to take 81mg baby aspirin every day and then the second I get a positive pg test I will go on Lovenox.

I am so angry because I thought about taking the aspirin just in case but was afraid to. But I am also relieved I have an answer. I pray to God every day that I will have another chance. :( :( :(

this is excellent advice!!
I was tested and found that I have Heterozygous A MTHFR.. which is a clotting disorder that causes problems with placenta development.

I'm now on one baby aspirin, prenatal vitamin, and Foltex per day. I'm hoping this will help. Next cycle will be our first time TTC after discovering my disorder and being on the meds.

On Deliver Me this week, one patient had Anti-phospho Lipid syndrome. They kept explaining how dangerous it can be and she had much more monitoring because of it. They talked about the daily Lovenox shots that she did and showed the bruises from injections. I was only on it for a month but got a couple of really good bruises. I don't have this syndrome but another clotting issue.

Sadly, Clotting disorders aren't all you have to worry about with the blood tests. I have an antibody issue that can kill my baby. ALWAYS have them test for everything!!!
