How long for cytotec to work?

Postby ladyraider » Sat Mar 12, 2011 7:45 am

I have a blighted ovum. Options were D&C, cytotec, or natural miscarriage. Natural could take 3-4 weeks, had a D&C with previous loss and it was a horrible experience, so I opted for the cytotec. I was instructed to take 2 pills (100mcg each) orally every 6 hours. I started at 6:00 pm, then again at midnight, then again at 6am, and will take final dose at 12. So far nothing, no cramps, nada. I have some indegestion but don't know if that is just stress or bad chinese food from last night. How long can it take to work? I called the doctor on call, and she was so rude! When asking her, she interupted me saying "can I talk" then said " I don't know you. You'll have to call your doctor monday". Okay, you may not "know" me, but your an OB. You know this drug, you can give some idea, but nope she was just rude. Finally she answered "awhile". What the hell does that mean? Awhile as in hours, days, weeks?? I finally said, ok so you are refusing to help me. And hung up. Why can't doctors be more sensitive to us? We are already going through nigtmares, them being Aholes is not ewhat we need.

First I am so sorry for your loss.

I am surprised your doctor ordered it that way. Most prescribe it vaginally rather than orally as it tends to be more effective that way and less likely to produce bad GI effects. With my recent missed M/C I was prescribed the pretty standard dose of four 200 mcg pills (800 mcg total in one dose) vaginally, with 2nd dose of the same to be repeated 24 hours later if no results. Your dose seems pretty low compared to what I was given and what I have most commonly read about...actually it is the same total dose in 24 hours, but yours is so spread out, perhaps too little at a time to have proper effect? Some women will have things happen within hours of taking it, for myself I took it in the evening and only started to bleed in the wee hours, passing tissue by lunch time.

I am sorry that your on call doctor was so useless! I am a nurse myself and I hate to see anyone in the medical profession be like that. I am also surprised that the prescribing doctor gave you so little information.

Hoping things start for you soon.

Thank you for sharing your experience and info. I'm sorry for your losses and wish none of us had to go throug this. I don't have experience with cytotec, but research has led me to the same conclusion you have. I took the 12 oclock dose (almost 2 hours ago and still, nothing. It is so frustrating! I just want this done. It makes it so much worse just waiting around to miscarry. Ugh!

I'm so sorry for your loss. I went through the same thing last month and my doctor prescribed cytotec as well. However, she prescribed it vaginally. She said you could take it orally, but one of the side effects doing it that way is diarrhea. Instead she recommended it vaginally. She said it would take about 3 hours w/severe cramping. So, she also prescribed vicodin. I took the vicodin, ended up falling asleep, and felt no cramps. If the oral method doesn't work, you may want to talk to your doctor about taking it vaginally.
