One chemical pregnancy or two? or GULP... ectopic

In June I got a BFP and made an appointment to see my OB/GYN. Three days before my first appointment (6 week appt) I began to bleed. They ran an U/S and a tv u/s and found no "material" as they like to call it, in my uterus or anywhere else. However, this would have been 5w4d. Also the Dr. Office urine test showed negative. They didn't run a blood hcg.
After my bleeding stopped 8 days later, my BBT dropped and I showed signs of ovulating earlier than expected and at 9dpo I tested due to having pregnancy symptoms again and got a BFP. I had a blood hcg test at 11dpo and my hcg was 176. Got my results from my second test at 15 dpo and it dropped to 138.
My doctor said she believed that this was just "material" left over from first pregnancy. Does this seem right to anyone? If negative urine test and u/s were one month ago how could my blood hcg be 176 still and dropping so slowly? If it was that high a month ago to still be dropping wouldn't I have gotten a + urine sample? Would my BBT have shown ovulation? Does any of this matter?
Worse off could this be ectopic?
I know it doesn't matter and I'm dealing with a loss either way, the first one still or a new one, but obsessing about this makes me feel in control more.

I don't know about MC, but definitely not ectopic. For ectopic your HCG would need to be trickling up.

I would definitely say that it sounds more like 2 chemicals then leftover products of conception.

I agree, two miscarriages. You wouldn't have a neg pee test and an ultrasound showing nothing, and then suddenly there's "leftover tissue". Your doc isn't the brightest. :/ I'm sorry for your losses and this extra confusion on top of it. :(
