Partial Molar Pregnancy

Postby Asheo » Fri Nov 15, 2013 9:59 am

I had a D&C on October 3rd after finding out that my baby had stopped growing at 10 weeks, 3 days (I heard the heartbeat at 10+4)... today I got the results from the tests, partial molar... the doctor is going to meet with us on Monday to talk about it but he said that we should not TTC for A YEAR!!! A FREAKING YEAR!!! I'm beyond devastated, here I am CD16, should be Oing any day now, looking forward to my rainbow baby and I get smacked with this...
In a year our youngest will be 2.5... she'll be sleeping through the night, she'll be potty trained, she won't be much of a baby anymore... I'm not going to want to start over then... this whole thing SUCKS!

That is a really long time! Why do they say to wait so long? Is it worth it to get a second opinion?

I'm sorry to hear this happened to you! :( Here is some info from the Cleveland Clinic website:

What is the treatment for a partial molar pregnancy?

A partial molar pregnancy is treated by removing the embryo and placenta from the uterus. This is done with a surgical procedure known as a suction curettage, in which the cervix is dilated (opened) and the embryo and placenta are removed from the uterus.

After this procedure, the doctor will continue to measure the woman’s beta HCG levels for up to a year to determine if there are any remnants of the molar tissue in the uterus. The woman should use reliable birth control methods during this time to keep from becoming pregnant.

In a small number of partial molar pregnancy cases, there will be some molar tissue remaining in the uterus after the suction curettage. This tissue is known as gestational trophoblastic disease and may continue to grow. It can be treated with methotrexate, a medication that is also used to treat cancer. In rare cases, the gestational trophoblastic disease may develop into a cancer (known as a choriocarcinoma). This, too, can be treated with anti-cancer agents.

Can a woman become pregnant after a partial molar pregnancy?

Yes. The odds of the woman having another molar pregnancy are small (approximately 1-2%). In order to be sure that the uterus is free of molar tissue, the woman should not try to become pregnant until a year after treatment.

Sorry for your loss Asheo and that you have to go through this.

I wonder if there is anyway they can confirm all the tissue is gone earlier than a year? Is your hcg back at zero yet?

No idea, haven't had any blood tests... my pregnancy tests are pretty negative, maybe a hint of a line that only the trained eye can see lol, so not far off anyway.
I've read that there isn't really any reason to wait more than 3 months after 3 consecutive weeks and months of negatives... so if all is well, we'll try in February, but even that is too far away. :(

Waiting sucks. We were told to wait 3 months or 2 'real' cycles. I want to try now. Hopefully we get the go ahead soon but I fear I might O again before my f/u appt with the surgeon/ob.

Fx this goes by quickly for all of us.

There was only ONE 0.6 cm cyst floating around all alone in my case... that seems like a positive diagnosis, I think? I really disagree with the wait time now! 3 months sounds like more than enough in my case. They doubted that the result would be PMP because it wasn't what they would typically find.

That sounds like great news! Considering the situation that is the best result you can get I think. Did they change the wait time at all? If not I would think after 3 months and no concerns you could get a second opinion. If there was only 1 cyst that doesn't sound alot like a PMP, but I don't know a lot about MP's.

so the doctor didn't even have the full report from the testing with him, so I actually know more than he does about my case right now lol, I couldn't tell him that though or my friend would get in trouble for telling me haha... I went to have my blood test done to check HCG level.
I asked if I were already pregnant right now since I O'd on Friday night what would happen... he said that they would have to do more frequent ultrasounds since they couldn't rely on the blood tests to be sure the HCG was only rising because of a pregnancy... that's it... so big woop, wait for their convenience.

The risk of growing more cysts with a PMP sounds kind of scary, but a year seems a bit excessive. I often wonder how much waiting is for their convenience too.

Everything I've read says that if you reach negative on your own, it's highly unlikely that there will be any regrowth... so as long as my test is negative now and next month, we're not going to wait.

I would do the same. Thinking of ttc next month regardless. This month I needed some healing time from surgery but now I don't see the point in waiting another month.

Drs are horrible for that. Don't they realize waiting is the most horrible thing for a woman ttc?
