Cytotec/Misoprostol before m/c begins

Postby Rhondalynn77 » Sun Apr 06, 2014 8:04 pm

Ok, so I found out yesterday that my baby stopped growing 3 weeks ago. I am 11w3d and the baby measured 8w2d. I have had some cramping but miscarriage didnt actually start yet, no bleeding so I started cytotec late last night (3am this morning actually) 2x200 mg every 6 hours, i have taken 3 doses so far and the only progression i have had is worse cramping, after the third, i put under my tongue, i actually had some bleeding, but that stopped. I am having pretty bad cramps and i am on pain meds. I think this next dose i am going to insert vaginally. I don't really want to wait weeks for this to happen and i dont want a d&c.

Has anyone had a similar experience? Originally the doc told me to start the medicine when things started happening, and i had some heavy spotting which is why i started the medicine. But i feel like this is taking a long time compared to what i have found online.

Hi, I'm sorry you're having to go through this. It sounds a lot like what I just went through. I started taking Cytotec Friday morning. I did 400mcg every 8 hours x 4 doses. After the first dose I had a fair amount of blood and one big clot. After that, all I had was very scant spotting. I'm worried the medicine didn't work. I guess I was expecting a lot more to happen, especially after all the stories I read online. I have to schedule an ultrasound to find out for sure if I completed the miscarriage.

I used Misoprostol 800mcg vaginally x2 doses 24 hours apart.
I have a complete blog post of my hour by hour experience if you would like the link. Just send me a message for it.

I want to say that I'm very sorry for your loss. I had a blighted ovum and was given cyto tech about 2 months ago. I took 3 doses 4 hours apart. After the third dose I had slight cramps. I had no bleeding until the next day around noon. Then I started gushing (sorry tmi). It was hard to control and I almost went to the er. Then I passed the sac and the bleeding slowed. I had an u/s the following week but I still had major cramping and even though it looked clear the dr had me take another dose of cyto tech. I began passing larger clumps of clot/tissue then and my bleeding stopped after another week or so. I feel like it's something that's very hard to get through and without the support of family and friends I don't think I could have. I hope you are doing well and I will be thinking about you!

becky thank you. I am sorry for your loss.
ekkotack, im sorry for you too, how are you doing?
Graphic details:
I ended up not having anything happen from the 8 doses. I went into see an ob on tuesday and he said my placenta was completely intact and he said usually with a m/c that it starts to become oblong as it deteriorates, but that hadnt started. I opted to have a d&c as i felt that i didnt want to try the cytotec anymore. I had my pre-op visit on wed and the d&c was suppose to happen on friday morning. Well my ob who was going to do the d&c had me take 2 doses of cytotec to soften my cervix. I took one dose on thursday night and the second early friday morning. I started cramping on the way to the hospital to check in for my surgery. I basically ended up going into labor with contractions and everything in the waiting room, my obs first surgery was running behind and they didnt have a place for me to go. I didnt take any pain meds that morning since i thought i would be having surgery soon. Well i waited 3 hours before even getting in to a bed and by this time i was in so much pain, they finally gave me something (which barely took the edge off, just made me groggy). the cramps/contractions were horrible. After the worst of them i felt something 'pop' which was my water breaking. They called my ob and told her what had happened and she came down with a u/s machine and externally checked me to see if anything was still there. she said i had passed everything and it was probably in my vagina since i was still laying down in bed, i got up to use the rest room and passed a rather large clot which i thought was the placenta and baby. my ob said i didnt need the d&c since things happened on their own, so i finally got some iv pain meds (they couldnt give me anything really earlier, i think they gave me guaifen) so i got a dose of dilaudid and was discharged. Well i had more cramping, clots and blood and finally around 4am i actually passed the placenta and baby. I think what i saw at the hospital was just a large clot. (this is my first m/c and i didnt know what to look for). I am not sure if my doc just missed it on the u/s or was just looking at the stuff in my vagina on the us thinking that it was the placenta and the baby had been absorbed, but no she wasnt. The placenta was mixed with a rather large clot, everything was around the size of a stick of butter. I actually scooped everything up into a plastic cup and woke dh up. (i had a few pieces of toilet paper in the toilet so the clot/placenta was pretty much on top of the bowl.) Dh and i prayed over our baby and then i made dh flush, i just couldnt. Over all i am glad i didnt have to have surgery, but i really wish i had taken my pain meds at home before going to the hospital. The pain was awful and since i was in pre-op the nurse didnt really know what was going on, otherwise i think she would have had them give me more pain meds. I could also tell she had not had a miscarriage by the way she was asking the questions. Dh was right next to me when my water broke, and through all of this. Miscarrying is an awful experience and I pray non of us ever have to go through this again. Sorry this post is so long and detailed.

Hi, I am so sorry you had such an awful experience! My body did not respond to the Cytotec either. I went in for an ultrasound last friday and saw the little sac still just sitting in there! I'm headed in for D&C on April 21st.

Thanks. I'm doing okay. I'm having some cramping so I'm really hoping to miscarry naturally before the scheduled surgery. We shall see!!

Keep some pain medication on hand! Once that miscarriage gets moving it's going to hurt. It's the worst pain I have never experienced. I was very glad to use the miso and know when it was coming so I could have pain relievers on hand.

Good work! One thing I didn't have that I wish I did was some baby wipes. Another lady had suggested them to someone else when they were getting ready to use miso.

yes dh picked up some for me and they are a lifesaver especially when stuff keeps getting everywhere, sorry if tmi. I found the always extra heavy overnight pads were great, they are huge though, about 14" long and 4"wide... but they cover. ekko, the last 2 doses of the cytotec after 5 days of bleeding did the trick for me, are they able to prescribe you another couple doses? and yes, do take the pain meds.

Doctor offered me another course of the pills, but i declined them because they made me feel so wretched the first time I took them. I spent an entire day in bed with what felt like the worst hangover ever! I'm sooo hoping this passes naturally. I get a spotting and then nothing and then another hint of spotting. wth! come on!
