First period after miscarriage

Postby pumpkinseed » Sat Feb 14, 2015 10:11 am

Can anyone share what first period was like after m/c? I had missed m/c and didn't start bleeding (from m/c) until Jan 14. It wasn't too heavy but cramps were horrible and I felt contraction-like pain for about two hours. I had pressure near cervix and severe cramps/diarrhea. Later that day passed the sac. Bled lightly for 3-4 more days and it was over.

Almost exactly 30 days later, Feb 10, I started spotting clear mucus tinged with pink. Then tiny brown stuff (not much), some brownish (blood?) and one day wiped darker pink (still not red). Today, Feb 14 still barely spotting brown.

Was this my period? Is that enough to count as a period? I normally have bad cramps but had only very very minor cramps - barely there.

I'm sorry for your loss. Although I haven't experienced a m/c, all I can tell you is that spotting doesn't count as you period. I hope some of the ladies with more knowledge can help you out. Fx that everything normalizes and you can get your rainbow baby!

Thanks..

I actually starting bleeding heavy today and cramping as usual so this must be it. Do I count this as day 1 of period or last Tues when I started spotting? I never spot before periods so this is all new to me.

I actually have to wait to ttc 'til next cycle (big bummer) as I'm going on blood thinners and other meds to avoid another m/c hopefully. I have a bunch of blood clotting disorders they uncovered and I have to go on metformin for polycystic ovaries (not the syndrome). It sucks but I'll need to adjust to the meds and I'd rather wait it out than go through another m/c. Crossing fingers all goes well. If we conceive next month, I may just have a holiday baby.

Thanks! Wishing you lots of luck, too!

Sorry to hear about your loss.

It's good that you're being proactive about your clotting issues before getting pregnant again -- that's a signal you have a good doctor.

Just to chime in with my own story: I miscarried (using misoprostol) on January 9th. On Sunday Feb. 8, I got what I thought was my period -- it was very normal and just like my regular periods -- which lasted until Thurs. Feb. 12. I was happy because I thought it was finally over with and I could move on.

But on Friday, Feb. 13, at about 9pm, I started gushing blood, huge amounts of bright, red, blood, and large, dark clots (the size of chicken livers -- yum!). I've never bled like this or seen clots like this, ever -- and I've had two miscarriages. About four hours later the bleeding tapered off, and on a subsequent visit to my OB the sonogram looked clear and everything seemed normal. When I asked what the hell happened on Friday, he said, "It might have been a funky period."

The point of my story is to tell you that whether you're experiencing spotting, bleeding, clotting, or cramping, the first period after a m/c is *extremely* variable. Be prepared for everything, but don't panic about anything. Don't worry about things that don't seem normal or familiar, or how long things take, or don't take.

I wish someone had warned me to expect the unexpected so I wouldn't have freaked out and gone to the ER because I thought I was hemorrhaging! So I'm passing along this info to you all :)

Thanks Andrea,

I appreciate you sharing your story. You are right, our experiences, although somewhat similar are also unique and can be so varied. You can't really ever know "what" to expect when it comes to something like this.

I wish there was a book called "what to expect when you're miscarrying."

I feel lucky that my period arrived pretty much on time and according to my OPK's I ovulated on time as well. So I'm hoping the next round of ttc results in a sticky baby.
