Metformin

Postby Hottie » Wed Feb 27, 2013 6:45 am

Hi! I think I may be in denial. I've had two out of five doctors say they 'think' I have pcos. I don't mean to be in denial but these doctors just seem so wishywashy! If they gave me a definitive diagnosis I'd be more accepting. Anyways, I'm 5'5 and 150lbs. I've gained about 20lbs over last 5 years. Blood tests have confirmed that I do ovulate on my own. I've been prescribed metformin but the endocrinologist says it won't help me to conceive if I'm ovulating already on my own. I've been having more low blood glucose levels than high ones! Just wandering if anyone else has been prescribed metformin that ovulates on their own? If so, what was your outcome? Did you end up getting pregnant? I'm 37 years old. Running out of time. Ivf is not an option and I've had 2 failed iui's with follistim and ovidrel.

Hi! I'm 34 (almost 35). I was diagnosed w pcos last nov and started met (3x500mg daily). I ovulated on my own but my follicles were small. Doc saw string of pearls on ovaries w clomid cycles. Gals have had success w clomid + met. I think the idea is that met helps to control insulin resistance and helps to improve your egg quality. I have done 6 iui cycles without success. One more iui then we r moving to IVF. The met is supposed to help u maintain the pregnancy as well. I'm also trying to go gluten free (even though I didn't test as gluten intolerant) to see if that will help.

Maybe u can seek a second opinion?

I don't ovulate on my own, but I'm not insulin resistant either. My endo prescribed met but it made me horribly sick so I'm on Glumetza which is just formulated a little diff but same concept. I've asked a few times why I need to be on it if I'm not IR and it doesn't help me ovulate and always told it helps with hormone regulating in general. It's more of an off label use that way but I have also heard it can help lower the risk of mc which is common in PCOS women. Definitely take it with food and slowly up your dose. If after a couple months you're still extremely sick ask your dr about other options. Glumetza still causes some GI issues for me but not as bad as met. Hope you get your BFP soon and some more definitive answers about PCOS

I was kind of like LK...PCOS, don't ovulate on my own, but not insulin resistant either. At first, my RE said metformin wouldn't help me much since I wasn't IR, but when I started responding so poorly to meds, he said it was worth a try. After being on it for a few months, I did start responding to medications a little better. It caused some pretty bad GI problems for the first couple of weeks for me, but then things improved and I was able to tolerate it. If you cut ack on the number of carbs you eat, the side effects won't be as bad. I stayed on metformin my entire pregnancy and while breastfeeding so that I didn't have to deal with my body adjusting to staring it again when we were ready to TTC another baby.

Some drs said I had pcos without even doing an ultrasound! I was put on metformin because I asked for it not because I had all the symptoms of pcos. After starting the metformin and several months on clomid cysts returned to normal ovaries and things look better this month. I still haven't gotten a bfp but I would suggest finding a dr that will give you metformin even if he doesn't think you need it, a lot of women Benefit from this because it brings down the androgen levels in the blood (male hormones)

I was diagnosed with PCOS a few years ago because of my testosterone levels in bloodwork and the fact that I have had issues with acne. No other symptoms, except that I had gained some weight...my ovaries didn't look like PCOS ovaries and my glucose was low when tested, not high. I was on it for 2 years, only 500 mg. Then stopped taking it. Moved and started seeing a new Endo and RE, and they both thought I should be on it based on new bloodwork and now I'm on 1500 mg a day, extended release. I always ovulated on my own before taking metformin, but I've been told that I will stay on it while pregnant to help avoid miscarriage. I have a double whammy with hypothyroidism that also causes miscarriages, so I will definitely follow their advice. Hoping for a BFP this month with our first IUI.

Hottie-good luck to you too! Don't give up! Like I said, I was on it for 2 years, and my new RE in Atlanta said 500 mg wasn't enough to do anything, so now I'm on 1500 mg. I don't think metformin alone will be what gets me pregnant, but that, along with other things is what should do it. Have you taken anything else?

I've done everything including exploratory surgery shy of ivf. Failed iui's with injectable meds. We're done with fertility treatments. Just gonna leave it up to God now.

I've been on metformin since November when I was diagnosed with PCOS due to high testosterone levels. It isn't clear if I ovulate on my own but I know I do sometimes. Just had my third MC and an now undergoing testing to see if there are other issues other than the PCOS. One thing I did find out with this loss that I didn't know is that PCOS alone can cause MCs and I was told if that is the case with me then I should stick with the metformin as well as start progesterone. I wish I could find a new endo or even an re because it was my midwife who mentioned the progesterone to me and I feel my endo should have before now but with my insurance its hard. I hope all is well with you ladies and good luck on your ttc journey.
