how were you diagnosed with PCOS?

Postby saucel » Sun Oct 13, 2013 12:19 am

I'm going in to see my midwife at the end of this month (unless I get a BFP) because I'm curious about whether I truly have PCOS or not. I've been told by a doctor in the past that I am a poster child for it, but she never did draw any labs. I just had a pelvic u/s a few weeks ago that showed normal ovaries. I know that a polycystic ovary is not required for diagnosis, so I am curious - those of you who have been diagnosed - how was that confirmed?

Horrible pain. Lol
I was having some 'quality time' with DH, and got the worst abdominal pain ever, so I went to the er. They did an ultrasound and found nothing, but my hormones were all over the place and my periods were crazy. The doc said the pain was likely a cyst bursting. I also developed hirsutism.

I was diagnosed as a teenager. I had a lot of acne and facial hair so they did labwork and an u/s which found cysts. I don't see how your doctor is diagnosing you with PCOS without bloodwork. You should definitely talk to her more and request bloodwork. What symptoms of PCOS do you have?

Did they do a transvaginal US or just an abdominal US?

When I first went in looking for a diagnosis (I was sure that I had PCOS) they only did an abdominal one. They did that, ran some labs and pretty much "silly little girl you are just fine". It wasn't until six years later at the urging of my then-boyfriend and me still having all the symptoms that I went in for a second opinion. This provider had me do a transvaginal US and the pearls were clear as day. The tech said she didn't know why they would have only done an abdominal US before because it is so hard to see the ovaries well enough to tell that way. I know you don't have to be polycystic to have PCOS, but it's something to consider.
