Questions about PCOS

Postby v0mich01 » Mon Jan 27, 2014 9:30 am

I am currently diagnosed as unexplained infertillity. But I'd like to get some of your opinions on it.

I know there are three criteria for a PCOS diagnosis, and you have to meet two of those criteria.
1) Poly cystic ovaries.
2) Longer cycles(my RE said 37 is the minimum, with an o date of 21)
3) Elevated levels of androgens.

1)I have poly cystic ovaries.
2)My unmedicated cycles average 35 days, but a couple 37 a year isn't completely out of the questions. Just for every 37, I'll have two 33 day cycles.
3) Levels for testosterone my RE said something like(I don't remember the exact number) but anything less than 46 normal. and mine was 44.

So, anybody else in a similar situation? I technically only meet one of the criteria, but the other two are just barely a miss. Anyone else out there like this?

That sounds like PCOS to me. Maybe he can give you some metformin, that is supposed to help lower androgens. Lots of women have PCOS with semi-regular cycles like yours.

I hope you dont have it though, I hate it! :praying:

I know it sucks, but I feel like if we could have a diagnosis it would help me process things. Instead of this silly unexplained category we're in.

I was diagnosed on the bloodwork alone, but I also have soooo many symptoms of it. My ultrasound showed nada, oddly enough. I know I've said this a million times on here, but taking a vitamin D supplement changed my life! lol I was put on metformin originally, but it didn't do anything because my symptoms weren't a result of insulin resistance. Eventually my gp did a vitamin D test, and it was crazy low. I started taking a supplement, and my periods got regular. Also, my moodiness/depression ebbed, lost a bunch of weight (not all I need to lose, but a HUGE help) and the *ahem* extra facial hair diminished quite a bit. She told me PCOS and vitamin D deficiency go hand-in-hand. But it's a "chicken or the egg" situation. They don't know how they're related.

Definitely agree about the low D. Mine January of 2013 was a 9, this summer it only rose to a 26. I am STILL trying to get it raised!

It takes time if its low.

I was at 6, I took 3000-4000 iu a day, and it took 3 months to get it to a liveable level. It's so worth it, though.

Re: Questions about PCOS

Hi ladies,

Hoping you can give me some insight as well. I am concerned that I may have pcos too. I have already seen my obgyn and expressed my concerns, but feel like she kind of brushed me off because I don't have pain and I'm not overweight (I'm 5' 110 lbs).
I was on bc for about 10 years and stopped taking it last July at age 24, since then I only O'd on cycles 1, 3 and 5, those were all 30 day cycles and the cycles I didn't O have been as short as 27 days or as long as 42 days.
I have also had bad acne for a long time; took acutane for it when I was 18 but it came back and has changed into my 20s and now only get acne on the lower 3rd of my face (especially my jawline) and back, and it is the knot like cyst kind that can be painful. From what I have researched, that type of acne after the teen age years can be due to pcos.

So what do you think? Could I have it?

Btw I don't temp, but counted an O by monitering CM and using OPK.

Thanks ladies!
I'm Amanda, 25 years old, DH is 31
Cycle 8 ttc
Very irregular and not ovulating
First appt with the RE is April 23rd
Tests so far say normal FSH, TSH and prolactin
Hoping I can get a bfp on this last cycle before starting treatment!

My wish came true! Got my bfp right after my first RE appt! Precious baby is due early January 2015!

Hi Amanda

I suspect PCOS. Your Dr was wrong to rule it out because you are not overweight coz there are some people who are slim but still have it. Taking bc for such a long time can mess up your system... it did the same to me.

Thanks for the response Thully, I am super anxious to get assessed. I really don't want to be right about the PCOS, but at the same time I want some answers and a direction to take for ttc.
What tests did your doctor have you take to get your dx? I have a feeling it might take awhile to get an appt at the REI clinic I was referred to because apparently Kaiser ob/gyn's can't take care of this sort of thing on their own.. If there's at least some more blood work I can do while I'm waiting I will try to talk her into that. So far, I have only had prolactin levels and tsh checked and those were normal.

Thanks again!

Hey Amanda

For me the Dr didn't do extensive testing. He just took into consideration, my hormonal imbalance, acne, weight gain, and he checked me internally and then he said I had PCOS.

I had a transvaginal ultrasound which indicated PCOS. So then asked about my cycle length, and did a testosterone blood draw. My average cycle length is 35, she said the cut off is 37. my testosterone was normal, but high end of normal. So I do not have PCOS, as in I don't fit the diagnosing criteria, but my RE gave me 750 mg of metformin to see what it does, if anything.

I've read on other posts here of women who were helped by metformin...i hope it works for you, and hopefully you wont suffer from the bad side effects :)
