Metformin - questions and doubts

Postby KatBK » Thu Feb 20, 2014 11:25 am

Hello ladies,

I had a few questions about Metformin, and was hoping someone here has been on it for long enough to give me some answers! :)

1. I've been on Metformin for about two weeks now, and I'm constantly craving sugar. Is that normal?

2. I haven't lost any weight in the past two weeks...in fact, I seem to have put on some weight around my middle, accompanied by bloating and the usual lovely side effects from Metformin. Anybody else in the same boat? If so, how long does this go on for?

3. How long did you have to take Metformin before your cycles were regular/shorter?

4. Any BFPs with just Metformin?

Thanks so much, ladies. I really appreciate this forum and all you wonderful people! :)

Ive been on it, about 3 1/2 months now. My blood sugar levels are now normal.

1. It helped my not crave carbs and sweets, and decreased my appetite.

2. I didnt lose any weight with it initailly, but once I started dieting and exercising I did. Which is a good thing, in the past I could diet and exercise and NOT lose anything.

3.No BFP yet, because I havent Od yet lol.

Its hard to say, are you monitoring your blood glucose levels? I wonder if maybe it is bringing your blood glucose levels down too low, and thats why you are having cravings? Just a thought!

My blood glucose levels were never any concern to any of the doctors I saw... But maybe I'll go in and ask for some bloodwork to be done.

Hi maddy, odd question, but have you O'd yet?

I'm on CD44 today...still only faint lines on OPKs and no AF. I've been exercising and following my usual diet (which is healthy...lol), but my weight is the same. :(

Hey :) I've been on Metformin for about 13 months now. My cycles regulated after 3 months (with diet and exercise too) now i am about normal 28-30 days cycles and ovulation around when I should with +opk's. I've had 3 miscarriages in the past 18 months. Opk's can be difficult when you have PCOS so the best test you can buy is going to be the digital cause it can give you better results without second guessing your self : ) GL

Thanks, ladies!

Today is CD50! I was supposed to go get bloodwork done a few days ago, but something always keeps coming up! I've promised myself that I absolutely WILL go tomorrow, no excuses!

I've just stopped using the OPKs for the time being. DH and I are leaving the country (for good) in 12 days (yikes!), so there's so much to be done. We're going to be in India (with my family) for a month, then in Dubai (with my parents and sisters) for two weeks, and then it's off to Canada in mid-May to start a whole new life! Exciting, but stressful at the moment with all the things that need to be done before we leave!

Hey hun, been on metforman for years. Just started on a 2000mg dose last month.
The craving of sugar. This is somewhat of an issue with diabetics. Or at least with me. But stay away from sugar as much as you can. With PCOS there is a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Or at least that is what I have heard. Could be wrong in your case.

Weight gain/loss/side effects. I suppose this is different for everyone. But with 2000mgs I have felt awful bloat, constipation, stomach cramps...I am still waiting for this to go away. But it isnt as bad as it was. And I have lost 5lbs because of the metforman. (35 total woot!)

Metforman ans cycles: well I have seen a spike in my temp on the days I should be ovulating. And have had one period since starting. And it was a normal 8-9 day period. No period this month though :( but still looks like I may have ovulated with higher temps this time around.

And no BFP sorry lol.

GREAT Blog here! I started Met 38 days ago. I started on cd1 of last cycle (coincidence) and I am not on CD2 of my second cycle. My cycles before Met were 40-50 days, the one right before starting was induced at 49 days. This cycle was 36 days!! :) I really hope it means I am headed in the right direction!! I was diagnosed with PCOS 3 months ago, no noticeable hormone issues, no cysts, I have irregular periods (since quitting bcp 11 months ago) and swollen ovaries (they are more round than oval apparently) I started with 500mg Met for one week and then moved up to 1000mg per day. I always take it at night & at first I felt auspicious s, but not it is fine. I have a pretty healthy bmi but I have felt like I might have gained weight since starting Met. I am sure if I just start running again it will melt off tho.

We have been ttc for 10 months. We will be taking a break until I get a regular cycle as I have found it too stressful to try with my cycles being so messy and long, makes me so emotional and sad.

I am going back for a check up in two months to report on my progress (if any) with met, So far I feel like 1 shorter cycle under my belt is a step in the right direction but only time will tell. I am considering asking about Fermara or Clomid.

I am 23 and DH is 32! We have been ttc for #1.

Thanks for this post, I am anxious to know all I can about Met & ttc!

Hi there! I've been on Metformin since December, so 6 months. At first it made me horribly sick. I started taking both pills at night before bed and it has greatly helped. I will tell you I was a sceptic about it working. I haven't lost any weight. It took a good 3 months of both metformin and Clomid for my cycles to regulate. Clomid on it's own didn't work. I went from having anywhere from 32 day cycles to 66 day cycles. Since the Metformin/Clomid combo my cycle has come every 29 days for the last 3 months. I ovulate on CD 15. I have not become pregnant yet and have been trying for 2.5 years. Good luck to you!

Hello ladies!

Thanks for all your replies. :)

I stopped taking Metformin in early April after consulting with an infertility specialist. My Glucose Tolerance Test was normal and he didn't see a need for me to be on Metformin.

I did round 1 of Clomid in mid April and got my bfp in May... I am currently almost 11 weeks pregnant with twins! :) I really didn't expect the Clomid to work, so DH and I were pleasantly surprised :)
