Postby tiffne » Thu Feb 20, 2014 2:56 pm

Well I just got back from the doctor to review my bloodwork. He said I definitely have it but scheduled me for a transvag ultrasound to check the severity. Ive always felt id never get pregnant and now I know why it hasnt happened. Im basically just looking for advice and someone to talk to who has been thru this before. What happens from here? For anyone who got there BFP with PCOS, how long did it take?

Well the theory with metformin and PCOS is, alot of times PCOS is caused from being insulin resistance. The metformin levels out your blood glocuse and it *should* stop the PCOS symptoms. Some times it takes a while for it to work, I have seen some claim it worked immediately then some claim it took 6 months or longer. I have been on it for 3 1/2 months almost and I havent seen much as far as my cycles becoming normal, but some of my PCOS symptoms have left or are not as severe. I have also been able to finally lose weight. Before metformin, no matter what I did I wouldnt lose weight.

I see. So how do they know if its being caused from insulin resistance? Is there a special test or would my glucose level tell all? And do you get more symptoms as time with pcos goes by or the symptoms I have now will be ones ill ever have?

I was diagnosed in June -- and my doctor said my bloodwork was pretty much normal only thing was that I have too much testosterone. She also put me on metformin (before bloodwork results got back and it indicated I wasn't insulin resistant, but she wanted me to continue taking it as it helps with levels of testosterone as well).

Good luck to you! Let us know what you find out!

Well my doctor never prescribed me metformin, instead just clomid. I did two months of birth control before I started the clomid to help with the cysts. I'm on round 4 now of clomid and when I went to the doctor last I asked him why I wasn't put on the metformin like everyone else. His response was that he's afraid bcus of my weight (127 @ 5'1) that the metformin would lower my blood sugar too much and cause me too feel sick. Although it doesnt seem I'm overweight, I am used too being 105lbs maybe have fluctutated to 110lbs my entire life, so now at 130 I feel I'm over weight. My glucose levels when i got my intial blood work had came back at the high end of normal so maybe since it was technically normal, he decided no metformin? He did say, however, if I choose to stop the clomid he would put me on metformin, which makes no sense with the reason why I'm not on it in the first place. Did you take an insuline resistant test or did your doctor judge on glucose levels? I'm still curious as how they know for sure if a person is or not.

Tiffne, when I was diagnosed the first time I did an actual glucose test to show whether or not I am insulin resistant (I'm not). Just recently (7 years after the first time) I was re-diagnosed and put on metformin right away. Like you I am not overweight (5'2" 120lbs) and so far I've had no problem with it. I do find I need a small snack or 2 at work between meals now though.
