Metformin and cycles question...

Postby hopefullymommy » Fri Mar 21, 2014 12:01 am

Hello everyone. Ive been on metformin a little over a month now. 2 weeks after starting the met I started af on my own after a 99 day cycle, and I had high hopes of ovulating on my own. .. however after only 24 days I have just started af again... with no ovulation... no temp change, and no positive opks. I know met alone doesnt help everyone and it isnt a miracle drug... but here are my questions
1. For those of you who have used met only did it help you ovulate?
2. If it did help you ovulate did it take a few cycles?
3. If it didnt help you ovulate did you have short cycles?

Thanks in advance for your answers! Baby dust to all!

I'm also interested in the answers to these questions! I was just diagnosed with PCOS a few days ago and have started Metformin. I'm interested to see what it'll do to my cycles.

I don't have answers for those questions because I'm just starting this journey myself, but I can tell you that the same thing just happened to me. I think it's just your body resetting itself. My period has been much more normal this time, and I'm hopeful for this cycle.

I got pregnant with both of my kids on Metformin alone. You may need to up the dosage a little more until you do ovulate. I got pregnant both times on 1000mg alone. If your cycles are closing in on normal, you are moving in the right direction. Good luck!

Hi
i started MET 3 weeks ago only but it hasnt done anything with AF yet, however i've been very nauseaus. i've done a lot of blog reading and it seems that if you have started AF on your own MET is helping you already!! as you will hopefully be back to normal cycles and the rest will come. your RE can also suggest Clomid and MET together to help with O. GOOD LUCK!!

I have been on 1500mg of Metformin a day for a year. The only successful cycle I had on just Met was still close to 100 days. I have been using Letrozole to induce ovulation and Progesterone to keep my levels normal after O. For some women, Metformin by itself is enough, for others (like me) we need a bit more support by adding additional drugs.

I have been on metforman for years! Highest dose was 750 mgs. Now I am on 2000mgs of it and have seen a change. When I started it at the beginning of last month I hadn't had a period in 2 or 3 months. Didnt know my ovulation stuff then. Well last month I had a 8 or 9 day period with normal blood flow. Which usually my periods can last about 3 weeks. Longest one I had was about 2 months. And taking my temp I did see a rise for about 2 days. Went from 97.4 to 97.7. Continue to this month it was 97.9 and has been at 97.7 for two days. Normal was about 97.3.
This month I did not see a period though which made sceptical about ovulation. But have read about people becoming pregnant having no periods for years before hand.

So yes I do believe in higher doses metforman can help you ovulate. Really I guess it all depends on the person.

Ive been diagnosed with pcos largely because i am insulin resistant and have short lps. I started on met 500mg in may and I ovulated 5 days earlier than my earliest oday (was cd19) then last month and this month o oed on cd15. Which shortened my cycles by that much cuz it didnt change my lp (only one cycle to go on) I am pleased that i have results so far. I tried to go up to 1000mg (per doc) but i have ulcerative colitis and because the met affects the gut so bad, it put me in a flare. I went back to 500mg (it was working, but slowly) I also take vitex in hopes that both along with weight loss will help lengthen my lp.
sweet, do you use ff? can you post your chart in your signature?

Hi ladies, i started met (2,000mg a day) in feb and ever since every month i loose a day from my cycle. Going from 34 days to now suppose to be 28 days( havent had af yet and im on cd 36....fx preggo). Im too scared to test lol. But doc did say i ovulated each month which is a plus bc i have pcos with multiple cyst on both ovaries!! Bonus ...im loosing weight on the met also!!! :)
Just a side note im not insulin resistant just on met for weight loss. I diet exercise and meditate/pray everyday.
