Nausea with metformin

Postby calz » Thu May 01, 2014 5:41 am

I've recently had my 750mg daily doseage upped to 1500mg daily (3 tablets 500mg each). I take them three times a day with a breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

It's only been a few days but I'm suffering from nausea. I'm finding it hard to eat anything, as the thought of food makes the nausea worse, yet I have to have a proper meal before the medication otherwise it'll just make it worse!

Does anyone here have any tips for helping the nausea go away? Does it get better with time? It's make me feel weak and I find I can't move around much without feeling worse!

I've also read in some places that metformin doseage sometimes depends on your weight. I am 130lbs, 5'5 height. I am wondering if 1500mg is a bit much for me.

Oh and everyone talks about their FSH/LH ratio. I have no idea how you work this out. Can someone please work mine out for me? My CD3 bloods showed FSH 7.9, LH 11.2. I was also tested for Prolactin this same day, which was 48.7. I believe the cut off is 24, but my Gynae said she'll leave that for now because she thinks it's due to stress! I was very very stressed out those days, as we were suffering with some very serious problems with the Vaginismus, so it would make sense.

Yes, I agree naps help! I take my first pill of the day extremely early morning, for which I have to put an alarm on. Recently I've become a bit lazy with getting up and eating something before taking the tablet, and I've been having it on an empty stomach before falling asleep straight after. I find I don't feel sick at all when I wake up (or during sleep!), despite having taken the tablet on a completely empty stomach. If I ever did this during the day time, I'd be gagging every 2 seconds from the nausea. Somehow sleep helps in a mysterious way.

I hope 1500 isn't too rough on you, but I must say I already feel a lot better. Nausea has almost completely gone. I only rarely get it if I sometimes don't have the medicine IMMEDIATELY after a meal, especially if the last meal I had was very light. These scenarios are hard to avoid on a daily basis, but otherwise I feel so much better. I was also on Ponstan Forte for a few days to stop my 10 day period, and I feel that was contributing to the nausea a lot, since that was also 500mg 3 times a day, so I was basically taken 3000mg worth of meds in a day. But I don't have to take that any more.

Wish you luck with TTC too :)

I take 2000mgs a day. Have been taking metphorman for a while. And yes the nausea in most cases does get better. If after a few weeks it doesn't get any better talk to your doc again. They may be able to put you on something else. Or lower the dose.

I could not take Metformin, it made me terribly sick. I ended up taking Glumteza (Glucophage) and I have been on it for over a year with no problems. Good luck!

Thanks for the responses guys... Metformin got better for me after a week of the high doseage. I occasionally get an upset stomach, but I've noticed that happens if I eat anything too greasy. Nausea is pretty much all gone!

I take the glumetza as well. Dr said she was calling in metformin, but glumetza was the rx, so I just assumed it was the generic. I took 500mg the first week with my evening meal, bumped it to 1000 for a week, and will begin 1500mg tonight. Other than some diarrhea, which has subsided, I'm ok so far. Dr told me to get up to 2500mg if I can, but said I may have side effects that keep me from going that high. She said most ppl stay around 1500-2000. I'm planning to take all 3 with my evening meal, but when I attempt to increase more, she recommended taking 2 with breakfast, 3 with dinner ( if I make it that high).

Do you guys ever drink on it? I wouldn't mind having an occasional beer or glass of wine, but I have read different reports saying no alcohol at all, to a couple occasionally is ok. Is it ok to have 1-2 drinks per month with it? I forgot to ask dr & they didn't say.

Drinking is fine while on metphorman/glucophoge (sorry spelling) it may not help the hang over situation though. I used to drink about once a month and get drunk while on metphorman. And really had no issues.

I would however ask your doc about it. I am no expert.

Sure, thanks. I did end up asking dr, and they said it was ok. They also are going to switch me off the glumetza to glucophage as my insurance doesn't cover the glumetza at the dosage prescribed. Apparently they originally prescribed the glucophage, but pharmacy filled the expensive stuff. Go figure. Still waiting for af. Hope this begins to regulate me soon.
