Metformin

Postby kflores31 » Wed Nov 19, 2014 4:11 pm

Hi ladies. Received final diagnosis of PCOS today after blood tests came back. Doctor wants to put me on Metformin. Right now i'm finishing up Provera and hoping to start my period next week. Any ladies with experience on Metformin? What to expect? I've heard of some nasty side effects... any advice would be great!

Hi kflores

I've only been on it for a month but I just thought I'd put your mind at rest re the symptoms. Don't panic about it I was worried about getting really awful symptoms from it (because of reading stuff - I find I focus on the negative comment and panic) but I started taking and have had no symptoms at all. I understand everyone is different but because I'd focused on everyone saying it made them v nauseous that's what I'd told myself was going to happen but it didn't - AT ALL!!

Sorry I can't be more helpful in terms of how good it is but I wanted to make you not panic too much about symptoms like I did

Forgot to mention - just make sure you take with a meal! That's what stops the side effects! They're not as scary as they sound I promise - I think I'm going to be facing IVF myself from doing some research :(

Hope we both get our good news soon

I've been on it for a few months now. At first I had a bit of tummy upset, but it didn't last long. Now all is good, I have no issues with it.

I agree with bluenoser. The side texts don't last long. Def take it with a meal as that helps. I've been on it for a few months and I think it's helping! I had my shortest cycle ever (44 days) last cycle and I believe I'll have another one about the same length this time!

If you get side effects, stick it out, it's worth it. And if you have to stay at a lower dose for a few extra days before going up to the larger dose, do it. I wa so skeptical if it at first but I'm becoming a believer!

Hi Always- were you ovulating before going on Metformin? Or did the Metformin do the trick and help you ovulate on your own??

Hi, I started met on 10/16 and got a BFP on 11/25. I don't have PCOS, but did have slightly high insulin. I think I was always ovulating, but hoping the met is helping the bean stick. Met actually made me constipated and break out :-( but hopefully worth it all!

Kflores, I don't think I was ovulating with my crazy long cycles (usually 60+ days) but I wasn't using OPKs or temping so I can't confirm that. With my cycles alone though even my doctor didn't think I'd been ovulating. So that leads me to believe the met did the trick! Now we just need to get in some serious BD!

Hmld, congrats! I'm glad met worked for you! Fingers crossed it's a sticky one!

Always, your story sounds encouraging! I hope the Met does the trick for me too! I went off BCP in February (was on it for 10 years straight). I had four periods after coming off of the pill, all got longer each time, 35 days, 40 days, 42 days, 45 days, then I had nothing... nothing since July. I was on CD 100 something. I also don't think I ovulated those four periods either because I had no pain, no pms, no cramps, no nothing. Thats what all led me to the doctor and was diagnosed with PCOS. She said she wants to put me on Metformin when I go in for my next appointment in a few weeks and also discussed giving me meds to induce ovulation (ie: Clomid). I'm personally hoping the Met does the trick and I don't need any additional meds. So, you had a confirmed ovulation on Met?

Kflores, your story sounds so much like mine! My cycles started long and just kept getting longer until I was over 100 days in one cycle! I too hope met is all it takes.

As for ovulation, I had a + opk and the following day coincidentally had a follow up appt with my doctor. He did an ultrasound and saw evidence of ovulation. He did a progesterone blood test which did not confirm ovulation however I feel if I had ovulated less than 24 hrs before my blood levels wouldn't showmit yet as they haven't had time to rise. I guess we will see if I get AF or a bfp in the next few days!

So exciting! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you! I can't wait for the day I get a positive OPK! What day did you ovulate in your cycle? I have a bunch of cheapie OPK's so I don't mind starting early, but I also don't want to go through all of them in just one month haha
