Metformin alone, when to change it up?

Postby redmeetsfood » Tue Dec 30, 2014 3:58 pm

Hi all,

Thank you to everyone who is posting and replying. I've had my PCOS diagnosis for about three months and been taking Metformin ever since. So far, I'm not optimistic that it is working, but it's really great to read these posts and know that I'm not alone!

How long should I wait before trying something other than Met? I started taking it Sept 9, got a period on Sept 10, then between Sept and the end of Oct, I had three periods. I haven't had a period since Oct 24. I'm on CD 68. I haven't done any OPKs since my doc said to wait until my cycle evened out. I've gotten at least three BFNs, the last one being yesterday.

So my question is, when should I change it up? Have you had success with Metformin alone? How long did that take? If you added another med, what was it and when was it added? I'd love to hear any and all stories!!!

Thanks everyone!

I also have PCOS and have been on metformin 1000mg for 1 month. My doctor had mentioned starting me on clomid as well (I've been ttc for1 year) once DH's SA was taken care of. I have another appointment with my doctor at the end of this month, and am planning on discussing clomid with him. Since I don't have an insulin issue, I don't think met alone is going to help me. I'm really hoping clomid will do the trick.

Thanks, baby dust! I don't think I have an insulin issue either, but I'm not sure. Did your doc test specifically for insulin resistance?

I don't think he did. I have an appointment at the end of the month, and I'll ask him.

Hi red,
I wanted to give you an update and let you know that after almost 2 months on metfomin I finally ovulated! I didn't ovulate until cd33 and AF arrived yesterday. I'm hoping that as months go by, I'll start ovulating closer to cd14. I must say, prior to met I hadn't ovulated in foooooorever. Hang in there, maybe met will help you ovulate as well. I should add that I temp as well, which was what helped me realize that I did in fact ovulate.

How much met are you taking? It took 2000mg for me to ovulate on my own again. With that being said though, I would ovulate anywhere from CD19-CD60. So after 3 months on Met, my doc put me on femara so that we could time BD better.

That's great news about the ovulation babydust! (Sorry for the late reply, I've been hiding for a while.) I'm not sure if I ovulated but the 1500mg of Met and lots of exercise seem to be helping my cycle regulate. I temp, but my temps are all over the place, so it's not very informative. Maybe they'll even out as my cycles get more normalized.

Bee Bee, am I reading that right? BFP today?! Congratulations!!!!!
