Possible PCOS Diagnosis; Looking for Advice

Postby LEXINGTON01 » Thu Feb 12, 2015 10:53 am

Good Afternoon!
I am new to this forum as I just left my Dr.'s Office this AM with a possible diagnosis of PCOS. I would like to start with a little background...
My hubby and I conceived our first child with ease immediately after going off of BC. I was rather shocked at this, as I have always had extremely irregular cycles. Nonetheless, we were elated! During my pregnancy it became glaringly obvious that my Doctor at the time was a quack, as I experienced undiagnosed PreE (VERY long story) and it wasn't until my 35 week and a visit to an on-call doctor that I was I told I had the disease and that I would need to deliver ASAP. Luckily, both baby and I were fine!
At present, my husband and I have been TTC for over 16 months. Throughout this process I was doing OPKs, and reading them incorrectly; ie: what I thought was a positive was not in fact a positive, instead, my body was gearing up to ovulate, but never actually did. Logically, when I realized this about 5 months ago, I began to do some research.
I went to the DR today and was told that he would guess that I have PCOS. My symptoms are: irregular periods, excess hair in odd places, some blood and protein in my urine, inability to lose weight, acne, anxiety/depression, skin-tags, and painful periods. Evidently I am exhibiting most symptoms.
I now have to wait nearly a month to go for a 21-day blood test. I am told that from here, they will be able to tell if I am ovulating and will likely then be put on 50mg of Clomid.
What I am looking for is anyone with any light to shed on this.... What are my chances of having another baby? Is there any means of decreasing these PCOS symptoms? What might I do in terms of supplements or holistic care to decrease my symptoms/regulate my cycle/improve my chances of conceiving? What can I expect from having to go on Clomid?
Honestly, I am just reeling over what Doc said this morning. This is all so new to me, so any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I have heard of many women that have conceived with pcos. I personally know a couple of them, one is currently pregnant with her second child (1 year and a half after her 1st was born), and the other one is 12 weeks along and 34 years old with pcos from the get go.

I have no experience with either pcos or clomid, but just wanted to reassure you that it is still possible. I'd maybe post this in a clomid board or maybe the general TTC board if you don't get many answers on this side.

Don't lose hope!! Sending loads of baby dust your way!!

Lexi, I was diagnosed with PCOS 2 months ago. Drs have always suspected it but the only symptom I had was irregular periods so it was dismissed until I had difficulty TTC. My specialist sent me for tests and confirmed it. I am on clomid now - 2nd cycle. I haven't really had any side effects. Cycles were 35-55 and are now 28 days. I have heard spearmint tea can help?? Definitely don't lose hope as many women with pcos conceive.

Hey Jamster, sorry you've joined the PCOS club, it's not a fun one to be part of! One thing I would recommend is looking into low Glycemic index foods, as there is a lot of research about the effects of sugar (and white bread/pasta/rice) on women with PCOS.ive also heard metformin can do wonders, but I haven't been prescribed it yet. I tried my first round of Clomid and didn't ovulate so I'm coming up on my next round with a higher dosage.

One thing you might want to think about is temping. If you have irregular periods, it will let you know if you definitely ovulate or not, and may help you spot a pattern, or at least put your mind at ease. Many women with PCOS have fairly erratic and long periods with some weird temps, but I still find it helpful. I also thoroughly enjoyed the book, 'Taking Charge of your Fertility' which helped me learn a lot about cycles in general.

I can say waiting for something you really want is terrible, and feeling like you can't do anything about it is almost worse. If you need anything, we're here for you!
Me: 28, mild PCOS, history of large cysts that rupture, stage 1 endometriosis resulting in severe abdominal pain, lap to remove endo and adhesions (4/28), HSG shows clear tubes.
Clomid 50mg (6/15) - no response
Clomid 100mg (8/15) - scan shows ONE follicle!!

Thanks Little_Bits My obgyn hasn't confirmed it but def thinks I do Ive had regular periods but after my 3 rd m/c which was a D&C I started noticing harder O'l pains and irregular periods like once every two or three months. I have acne cyst like only under arm , thighs and breasts Ive always had a complex about this. Im also thinking because all of my m/c were very early 6-7 weeks so she also believes I suffer from low progestrone. She put this all in the referal to the specialist hope the specialist can find out for me :-(
