New to PCOS & Metformin

Postby DBMW » Thu Feb 19, 2015 12:15 pm

Just got my dx last week. Today is my first day on Metformin.....has anyone used pepto bismol to help with side effects? Or any other suggestions? I'm already keeping my diet super healthy to help minimize the s/e.

My trick is to always eat with it. If I take it on an empty stomach I'm doomed. When I first started, I took the night pill right before I went to bed. I had to run to the bathroom a couple times before I fell asleep, but at least I slept through the worst nausea. Also, it REALLY helped me to increase my dosage gradually. My doc prescribed increases weekly, but I needed longer than that. It's a long story, but if I had to do it again, I would increase to 1000mg after two weeks and 1500mg another two weeks after that (at least two weeks, maybe more).

Good luck! I hope it goes well for you and you have no s/e!

I might switch to taking it at night, today was a little rough. My dr started me out on 500mg for two weeks then up to 1000mg after that. I guess depending on how that works we'll discuss going to 1500mg at my next appt.

I was diagnosed with PCOS on Feb 18th and started taking metformin and provera Feb 19th. I took the metformin at 1000mg extended release tablets. It SUCKED so I broke it down to where I take 500mg when I eat breakfast and 500mg with dinner. That has worked amazingly. Almost no side effects! I just started af on the 28th and start taking clomid on March 2nd. So we will continue to see how this works! Baby dust to yall!

I was fine when I started taking the AM & PM doses. I got hit this weekend with the stomach flu though. I was afraid it was the Met, but when my husband started having the same symptoms I realized it was a virus. Thank god because I was about to throw out the Met LOL Ain't nobody got time for that!! I'm going to start taking it again tomorrow. Waiting for AF to finish to see if the 50mg of clomid will help me ovulate. It's my first Provera induced cycle so I'm not sure how long AF will stay. I've heard it can be longer due to the provera sometimes. I hope not.

Baby dust!!

Are you going to use opks or are you going to the doctor just to see if you Oed? I'm curious. Also I'm really glad that helped!!!!!. Hope you get over the bug.

I'm going to try OPK's this first cycle. I'm also going to chart my BBT. Hopefully between the two I'll be able to tell if it worked!

Mind if I jump in?
Been on metformin for 3 months & 3 days, today I'm on CD4 with my first AF since September and since starting met. Soo happy I'm not sure if met helped af but either way my moods are a lot calmer which has to be the met.

DBMW I'm trying opks this cycle, I was using them on CD168+ not sure why tho lol so now if actually got AF I'm not sure when to start looking for O signs? Lol
