Is the trigger shot worth it?

Postby WishingStar » Mon Oct 13, 2008 5:08 pm

Hi Clomid Chicks! :) After over 2 years TTC naturally, I'm starting my first round of 100mg., days 3-7 on Wed.! If there are any good follies, we'll do an IUI. Just thought about the trigger shot and I'm wondering if I should ask my RE about it. I'm on clomid 'cause I only have the right ovary & tube working. Left ovary is fine, have a small endometrioma on it (I'm so scared what clomid will do to it) but my left tube was stretched out from an endometrioma the size of a softball and is mostly covered with scar tissue/adhesions at the very end by the ovary so it's out of commission. We're hoping the clomid will promote ovulation from the right side and give us a chance at catching an egg. I DON'T have PCOS as I know people with it can benefit greatly from the shot, but just wondering what your thoughts are...

I pay almost everything out of pocket,...only diagnostic testing is covered so I highly doubt the shot would be covered by insurance. It will cost me around $65.00. We have the cash for it, but if it's not going to give us the edge, then we may skip it. Do you think it's worth doing? Why? Why not?

Thanks for your input! :D

Blessings and :babydustg: :babydustb: :sticky:

I don't know much about the shot except what I have read on here. I too have to pay out of pocket for everything. $65 is not bad for trigger shot I may hit my dr up for one next cycle.

Yeah... I'm wondering what others think about it. If they did it, do they think it helped or not, etc. My RE didn't say anything about it, but we only have 3 cycles on Clomid so I figured we'll do IUI and maybe even a trigger shot if it will help. If my body can do it on it's own though, I don't want to pay $65 for something that's free. ;)

Then again,....getting pregnant is normally free and look at what we're paying for!

The shot is probably worth it for you though, since you have PCOS... hope it works out for you if you're not PG this time around!

Blessings

I've done the trigger shot many times. I O on my own so I have skipped it on certain months too. My main reason for taking it is when we plan IUI. The trigger shot gives more control to timing O with IUI. Also, the trigger is suppose to help some of the smaller follicles catch up and pop when they wouldn't have normally done so on their own. I only have one tube but both ovaries. So if the main follicles are on the side with the missing tube, I skip trigger and IUI. I know it's still possible since the eggie can cross the body but it's pretty unlikely.

This has been my first round of Clomid and I did get the trigger shot. There are some women on here that have been on Clomid and they did not have the trigger shot and they didn't ovulate at all that cycle.

Clomid is just going to help your body mature some follicles. There is no guarantee that you'll ovulate. The trigger shot will guarantee that you ovulate.

For me, I have a history of anovulatory cycles so there was no way I was going to put myself through Clomid and not make sure that I also ovulated. In addition, I am also on prometrium to help sustain a pregnancy.

We'll see if it worked. Today I am officially late for AF. I had bloodwork this morning to find out if DH and I are pregnant.

I said yes...although it should have said maybe... let me preface this by saying I did not do the trigger shot, but have lots of buddy group friends who have or haven't and wished they did.

I didn't do it because my O day was really consistent on clomid. I always Oed on CD 12 or 13, so I didn't need the trigger. But personally I think it's really stressful trying to figure out when you're going to O so the trigger would take away some of that stress. Plus for friends I've had that did IUI, they were trying to analyze their OPKs and figure out for sure if they were Oing, and then there were times when they got their O date wrong and had the IUI at the wrong time because of it. Or then you might see your follicles get bigger, but that doesn't mean you will O for sure so the trigger shot guarantees O.

I don't know if that was helpful or not, haha. It was just random babbling on my part!!!!!!!

Just wanted to say thank you for posting this. I was really curious about the trigger shot as well. I have a lot of anovulatory cycles and I had been seeing my previous fert. spec. for about a year and he just had my on Clomid, with nothing else to get me to ovulate. So i never did. Just recently, (about 3 weeks ago) I started seeing a new doc and he immediatly set up a plan of action.

I take Provera to get AF, then 150mg Clomid days 3-7 and then an ultrasound on or around cd10 and then the trigger shot. Im so hoping this works. Your stories really gave me hope. I'll keep you posted with how it works for me.

Thanks WishN! :) I guess we have a similar situation. Nice to hear what others like me are doing. My RE suggested that if we ever have to do IVF, that we should have my other tube removed. Apparently it can seep fluids and what not into the uterus and prevent implantation of the embryos or something. I think it's a bit drastic, but she mentioned clamping it at our consultation visit so that's another option. Hopefully we won't need to go that route!

There are some women on here that have been on Clomid and they did not have the trigger shot and they didn't ovulate at all that cycle.

Eek! I definitely don't want to risk that happening. Thanks for your input NYsBelle! I'm sorry about the blood test, but it could still be early right? Your temps are looking good. :praying:

Victoria, you make me laugh! :D It was helpful. Thank you! I agree, the less stress, the better. My DH LOVES the idea of the OPK, so I'm sure he'll love the idea of the trigger even more. :D :congrats: on your pregnancy too! :jump: I remember you giving me info. when I asked about endometriosis and clomid a while back. Glad it worked out for you! Enjoy your pregnancy! :D

I'm so sorry that you had a year "wasted." :( Sounds like your new Dr. knows what he's doing! :jump: I see you were Dx'd with PCOS. I'd say, definitely the trigger shot for you! I don't know if you're open to taking herbs, but in case you are, I ran across a herb for PCOS in my Infertility Cure book last night. It's called Gleditsia fruit or Zao Jiao Ci. It dissolves the waxy coating found around polycystic ovaries and induces ovulation. You are only to take 1gram/day prior to ovulation though 'cause it's toxic in large amounts. I was surprised to find such a herb that works so specifically on a body part. Since you're going to do the trigger though, you may not need it. Hope the new plan works for you!

This is my second month of clomid/trigger. My RE does the trigger always with clomid. I asked last month what else the trigger does besides making you O, my RE told me is also helps create more progesterone and norishment for the egg before implantation.

Thanks boobunny! :D I have low progesterone and even though the clomid could help with that, there's no harm in having a little boost! I have a little bit of endometrosis in my uterus and am borderline anemic so hopefully all of this will "fix" my problems and get me pregnant! I'm also happy to hear that you had no s/e. I hope I'm the same way. :)

It's UNANIMOUS! So far EVERYONE voted YES! I will definitely be asking about it! My RE is pretty flexible with doing what I am comfortable with so she'll probably be fine with me taking the trigger shot. I'll email her in a bit! :)

Thank you all again!
