How many rounds of clomid should I try?

Postby Eren » Mon Mar 24, 2008 8:18 pm

Just out of curiosity.... when is it time to move on to something else? How many rounds of clomid should I try to give it a fair chance? Or should I stop wasting time and move on to more aggressive treatment more quickly?

Hi there! :) I am on my first round of clomid and I got a positive OPK yesturday and today is the 10th day after my last pill so O is right on schedule anyways in answer to your question my RE told me not to do more than 6 rounds of clomid and I asked if that was enough to give it time to do it's thing and he said it was MORE than enough chances to get it to work on me :) HTH :luck: GL

My doctor also gave me the 6 month time limit. He said if it's going to work, it will within 6 months and, if I've gone through 6 cycles and still haven't gotten my BFP then it's some other problem that Clomid isn't going to cure.

But whatever decision you and your doctor arrive at, Eren, is the right decision for you. Everyone's got different bodies so I think every case has to be individual, kwim?

Good luck though! I hope you see your BFP soon! :luck:

I wish I could help you Eren...I guess I would say no more than 6 due to lining issues...but I could only afford to do 3 rounds with IUI and it still didn't work. Now we have to try on our own until Dec. when my insurance will finally help (2 year mark). I think you said you don't ovulate on your own, so if I were you I would keep trying it for as long as you are allowed by your doctor. Maybe you could try it with IUI the next 3 months and then if nothing, think about IVF. We have unexplained infertility, supposedly NOTHING is wrong with either of us...and my RE said if nothing happens by Dec. on our own we need to think about IVF because I will be 32 by then. I know how you feel...I'm feeling down right now too, and I"m so tired of feeling this way. I hope things work out for you soon. Good luck!

I don`t think I`m quite ready to accept IVF yet. Maybe I will at some point, but I was thinking about seeing what intermediate steps can be taken first. I`m not ready to move on to the all or nothing stage.

Maybe I`ll just stick to whatever my doc says. I guess I`m just trying to find some way of controlling something that can`t be controlled.

I think we are all trying to find some other way!! :D
I don't like the IVF route either...my husband is ready to do it NOW and I keep fighting it, it's so intense! The doctors didn't find anything wrong with either of us, so something must be ok right??? Now that we are on our own again for a while, we both agreed to try accupuncture for a while. I actually found a lady that specializes in it because she went through infertility....she said she went through many IUI's and IVF's and was told she would never conceive...went into accupuncture, studied infertility and is now 7 months pregnant!!!! So she gave me some hope, and I figured at least it is something to try at the moment since we can't go on paying out of pocket for IUI's and clomid. Maybe you could try something like that??? I did it once and really liked it, so I think I will stick with this lady. I'm also doing reflexology and reiki...but only because I found a lady that is really cheap!! I hope you find something to ease the worry....I worry alot too so I thought maybe some of these alternative ways could help relieve some of the stress and worry. good luck to you. I hope everything works out for you!!

I say 4..... My RE says 4.... He doesn't like to go past that on any form of clomid because of it's effect on the Uterine lining... He's going to start me on some thing else next month with a trigger shot and the IUI.... Then I'm sneeking BDing inbetween after the IUI... Figured it can't hurt.LOL.... Mean while I'm waiting to see if my 4th cycle worked this month.... If I remember right, aren't you also having a hard time ovulating on the clomid?.... It definately sounds like you should find an Reproductive Specialist instead of an OB..... They can run tests to find out exactly what's going on hormonally and perscribe the right meds. I hear that a lot of the time, Dr's perscribe clomid because they think it's the mericle pill, but in fact it's not... It causes more damage to your body in the long run, and if your problem isn't ovulation it can dry up Fertile CM, and make it harder to get PG..... I hope you get more guidance then what your Dr is giving you right now... If you have any wuestions, feel free to PM me and I will try to find the answers....

I got my BFP on my 7th round of clomid. I was only really supposed to take 6, but while I was waiting for my RE appointment (to start IVF) I took another round (had refill left) and it worked.

Even on clomid it took a couple of months for my body to respond and to get the BD timing right.

I would recommend getting a Clear Blue Easy Fertility Monitor to anyone taking clomid (or even TTC). They are WAY more accurate than OPKs and predicting ovulation.

I think the CBEFM and the clomid was what finally did it for me!

That right there is the most difficult thing for me. I like planning and controlling EVERYTHING. I don't handle change/surprises very well so I guess the need to control every aspect of my life is kind of a coping mechanism?

*shrug*

I understand your hesitancy with IVF though. DH & I had a hard time deciding btw. adopting and conceiving our own so we said we'd give TTC a year and if it didn't work, we'd just adopt. Now that I'm nearing the year mark, I don't want to give up just yet... but in the same token, we've basically decided that we're drawing the line at Clomid. And right now, TTC is cheaper than adopting. So I guess we'll see what happens.

I agree! I think giving up control was the hardest part about the whole TTC thing for me.

I have always been a planner and a go getter. Everything that I have ever really wanted it seemed I could have if I just worked hard enough--TTC was TOTALLY different. I also used to get totally pissed when people would tell me to "just relax" Ugh! It still makes me crazy when people say that. Just relaxing might work for some people, but for others hearing it is like a slap in the face.

The cycle I got pregnant I had really kind of given up. We were going to see the RE and I was consumed with all of the insurance paperwork and reading up on all of the options. Two days after our RE consult I got my BFP. I guess the little bean heard that mommy and daddy were about to get stuck with a 15K+ bill and decided to finally show up!

Good luck to everybody with the clomid. I was really frustrated on all of my cycles of clomid. It was much harder than I anticipated--but it has all been worth it.

Hang in there and I know we will see lots of :bfp: :bfp: :bfp: on this board soon!

All this OB and RE stuff is complicated for me since I live in Japan.

Thanks for all your replies. I guess I`ll see what happens this cycle, talk to the doc and take it from there.
