IVF at almost 41

Postby Wannabmom » Thu Feb 24, 2011 6:26 am

I have been ttc for 2 years - first natural, then 5 iuis (failed) now I go in for the IVF talk. Seriously at my age should I give up? I am looking at 19,000 to start ivf with my own eggs. I noticed the success is better with a donor egg but that can be up to 50k right?

I am also starting home study and beginning paperwork for adoption. I don't care how I get to be a mom, I just want to be a mom, for a long time and I know that is what I am supposed to be. :-(

Hi Wannabmom- I was in a similiar position as you. I tried to conceive naturally for several years and then moved on to a fertility clinic at age 40. I had to have surgery due to a large endometrioma. I then did 2 IUI's and moved on to IVF. My RE felt that I needed to try with my own eggs before moving on to the donor option. He gave us a 10% chance of conceiving. After much soul searching we decided to go for it....and we are glad that we did. I had my egg retrieval the day before my 41st birthday.

I just wanted to share my journey with you to tell you it is possible. Best wishes to you :) I hope all goes well with your adoption journey as well!!

I did donor eggs at the age of 43. My fresh cycle was not good but did get my BFP on the FET. the chances of getting pg with donor eggs are so much higher.

Its a hard choice to make as to what path to follow and want to wish you luck.

I forget that I don't have the year in my sig. I'm currently over 7 weeks pregnant and awaiting my next u/s. It's still very early on but we feel lucky to have made it this far.

If you have any questions or just want to vent please feel free.

Is that the cost for one cycle? I know a lot of places do a cycle of 3 for $13,000 to $18,000 for our age category.

I would say to try your own eggs first and if you have a poor response then consider moving onto a donor.

Did you use any medication to stim for the IUI? If so, if you responded well, IVF may be a good choice for you. If not, then you probably won't produce enough good eggs for IVF.

If you FSH and E2 are favorable, you may want to consider it. Unfortunately for me, I had high FSH and E2 and I responded poorly to my medicated IUI cycle, so the RE gave me less than a 5% chance of conceiving. We opted not to do it b/c we already have our dd. Had we not already had her, we most likely would have gone the donor egg route b/c for us, that would have a much higher chance of a take home baby.

It's a tough decision and there is so much to lose, but so much to gain. GL w/whatever you decide to do.

I had 6 failed IUI's between the ages of 38-40 and numerous months of failed clomid. I tried IVF at 41 with my eggs and was successful on the first try. So it is possible. Good luck!

Ellen...if you don't mind me asking, how many eggs were you producing with the clomid v. the IVF protocol? I am thinking of moving onto IVF in a few cycles.

Hi,

I've been TTC for 2 years and I'm 44. 2 failed IUI's and no luck with Clomid. I am currently waiting for my test results. I had a lot of blood work done this past Tuesday. The results are going straight to the fertility clinic. My next plan is IVF with my eggs depending on what the test results say. So nervous! My last set of tests done 2 years ago came out fine but the clinic wanted a whole new batch of tests.

On a side note. I just found out a friend of mine just got her BFP. She's 41 and has been TTC for 2 years. I also have a friend that conceived naturally at 45.

I'm happy to see all the IVF success stories because my DH is having a fit over the IVF costs.

Fittblonde- I wasn't monitored for the clomid so I am not sure how many follicles I produced. With the gonal f my Dr. said I was a great producer! I think as many as 15+ folicles. I will try and find my paperwork. I think my IUI's failed because of egg quality and DH has a low sperm count. If I had to do all over again I wouldn't have wasted all that time on IUI's. I should have moved to IVF sooner.

I had IVF at age 41 and produced 10 eggs. Only 3 fertilized normally and only 2 made it to day 3. We put both in and originally I had twins, but we lost one before it ever had a HB. Our beautiful baby girl was born 9 months later.... GL.

Thanks Ellen and Holleigh. I am trying to get an idea on how I may respond on a IVF cycle. On my first cycle of follistim I got 3 mature eggs and one that lagged behind slightly.

If I am not pregnant by April, I am moving on.

Hi ladies!

I'm 41 and am trying my 3rd round of IVF with my own eggs. I also ad 2 failed FETs & 3 unsuccessful IUIs from the age of 36. This round, my FSH dropped to 4.8 & I had an antral follicle count of 27. We got 10 eggs last Friday, 8 fertilized (ICSI) and today, all 8 are still growing. Due to age, we've opted for chromosomal screening which we hadn't done in the past.

I've read that FSH, antral follcile count & AMH are all important in determining egg quality. These figures can vary month to month & with proper diet & supplements, all can be improved. I've never had numbers this good so am hoping that this round will be the answer to our prayers.

Good luck everyone!
