I really am thinking about trying it once and moving to a donor egg or adoption. Is doing ivf once selling my self short or should a multicycle be the choice for women at 40?

I just got pregnant on my third round of IVF at 41. I wish I'd gone to IVF sooner. I feel like I've wasted so much time. I TTC on my own at 39 for over 6 months before going to the ob-gyn. Then I spent months doing tests, before the ob-gyn sent me to an RE. Then months of clomid IUIs before I switched REs. New RE thought it was really odd that I would be doing clomid IUIs at 40 when my insurance covers IVF, and so I started IVF right away with him.

We decided to do 5 cycles of IVF with my own eggs before going to donor eggs. Donor eggs are soooooo expensive, but in the end I think it's cheaper than adoption and you get to be pregnant, and know who the father is.

I can highly recommend estrogen priming as that's what got me pregnant (IVF #3.) I think it also helped that I did acupuncture and I took DHEA, melatonin and vitamin E. You have to take the DHEA a long time for it to work, and I started in December, got pregnant in March. Also I ate pineapple and took zinc to help with implantation. We will seriously do anything to get pregnant.

Heather...congrats. What awesome news.

I'm with you. I was all prepared to start my first round of ivf today. I was on a break preparing my body for whatever it took to get pregnant. Well low and behold took a test and I'm pregnant.

If this one does not stick I'm moving right onto ivf. Unfortunately our insurance doesn't pay a cent!!! So I'm praying to mother nature this one sticks. Join us on the December due date board.

Hi Fittblonde, congratulations on your BFP. I've heard several stories of the BFP happening on a break. I wonder if it's the lack of stress. LOL Lots of sticky dust to you.

I will go check out the December due date board. I still can't get it through my head that I have a due date...

I know!!!! So weird...right.

Honestly, I was never too stressed throughout the process. I had 3 pregnancies and losses :(. Thinks it's all luck of the draw...barring any other problems.

See you over on the other board!

Hi Kelly,

How exciting for you to be beginning IVF! Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have. This whole process is very draining, emotionally, physically and monetarily. From hearing what everyone else says, my clinic is relatively low cost and it still cost me over $12,000 to get pregnant at 41.

Sounds like you have done the meds before for IUI, but ER and ET will be new experiences for you. I think it really helped me to have two days off from work for ET, the day of and the day after. I hope you can take the time to relax then.

Hoping you get lots and lots of follicles and lots of embryos to transfer!

Hi Everyone,
Heather - Congratulations on your success!
Kelly - I hope you have success with your IVF. You are still quite young and it may be a possibility to try the natural route if your money runs out and the IVF hasn't worked - one cycle isn't much to pin your hopes on.
The herb Vitex Agnus-Castus and the supplement DHEA have both helped get quite a lot of women in the late thirties and early forties pregnant, and ages 40-42 are much more likely ages for pregnancy to happen and be successful than afterwards for most women (some can go on longer). I never saw a doctor at all and just took Vitex, zinc (15 mg a day) and folic acid and was careful with diet etc.
But I'm hoping your IVF will work and you'll be back on with good news soon; lots of the ladies on here have found success lately,

Heather....congrats on your BFP!!!!

Kelly...I really hope that IVF #1 is very successful!

I was went for my IVF consult and was all set to start after a 2 month break from the meds and I wound up with a natural BFP. I read a book that combines western and eastern medicine and one supplement that they recommended taking that I wasn't already taking was co-enezyme Q10. Don't know if that had anything to do with it or if it was just the luck of the draw.

Good luck ladies.

Thanks, Bluedisc and Fittblonde. Fittblonde, that's a really high HCG, I wonder if you have twins. :)

I'm just learning now about Vitex and CoQ10, but I took DHEA, Melatonin and Vitamin E. I think they all work the same to make your eggs younger. DHEA works best if you take it for 3 months. Melatonin and Vitamin E, you're supposed to start on day 21 of the previous cycle. My FSH was as high as 10.7 at one point, but it was down to 3.0 when I got pregnant.

I also had acupuncture, took Zinc and ate pineapple including the core to help with implantation. Who know if it made any difference, but I don't think any of these things can hurt.

Kelly, best of luck to your on your IVF.
