Know anything about hormone levels?

My GP has just admitted that she does not, so I wondered if anyone else on here does know about hormone levels.

She sent me for Day ONE (I thought it was usually day THREE) oestrogen, LH and FSH tests. GP read the results and told me that my oestrogen levels indicate that I am POST menopausal but that my LH and FSH are fine.

Just got my Day 21 progesterone results which clearly indicate ovulation. Thank GOD.

Now I am veering between concern that my ovaries are about to crumble into dust and joy that at least they are still kicking out eggs in the meantime (at age 44).

Could this simply be because the blood was taken on Day 1 rather than 3, anyone?

Really have not enjoyed the past few months of thinking that I am midst menopause (although without any signs to back it up apart from the oestrogen levels....).

Thank you for any light shed/ reassurance.

I do not know much about hormone levels except I do know those tests are supposed to be done on Day THREE not one! Of course your estrogen is low..everything is low on day one! I honestly think you have almost no estrogen or progesterone on day one of your cycle. It appears to me that your hormone levels are good and not menopausal.

I copied and pasted this from cycle day one on
"During the first half of your cycle, known as the follicular phase of your cycle, estrogen and progesterone levels are low. Low levels of estrogen and progesterone are what signal your body to shed the lining of your uterus and begin menstruation".

I know we have only just met but I think I love you! :)

Thank you so much for saying what I have begun to suspect: my GP doesn't know what she is doing and my levels are fine.

I have spent the past 2-3 months with a knot in my heart being told by her that I am POST menopausal and that she just doesn't understand what's going on!

For someone who is TTC that was the most devastating thing - as you can imagine.

The quote makes perfect sense and I am going to relax now with that going around in my head.

Have a lovely day!

Awe...sweet, sweet! I needed some love today :). Thanks!

Okay, so here is more copy and pasted.

"Day 1 of your period marks the first day of your menstrual cycle. Many women believe their cycle starts at the end of their period, but this is not the case. On Day 1 of your cycle, estrogen levels are at an all-time low. Estrogen is a good thing; it's associated with increased activity of serotonin, a feel-good chemical in the brain."

"On Day 1 of the menstrual cycle, estrogen and progesterone levels are low. Low levels of estrogen and progesterone signal the pituitary gland to produce Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH). FSH begins the process of maturing a follicle (fluid-filled sac in the ovary containing an egg). "

I could keep going and going..but I won't. I think your doc is WRONG and should have not told you that:(. I am very sorry. I would ask for a repeat of hormone levels on day THREE, she owes you that much! Or maybe find a new GP or GYN that does hormonal treatments etc :).
Good luck!

Wow! You are a STAR!!! Truly, I am so grateful to you for finding and posting this info for me. I have been looking for exactly that info and just couldn't find it.

I have called the surgery and asked to speak to a different doctor who knows more about this 'stuff' and now have a 'phone appt to chat about my test results tomo. I will ask for a day 3 test to clarify that I am not menopausal.

In the meantime, I am walking on air!!

You have made me so VERY happy and relieved. :) :) :)

Hope to return the favour as and when.

Glad you are getting phone conversation and blood work repeated. At least this time it will be accurate :). YOU deserve that!

I'm glad I could help :). I may need your support in the next couple of months with this ttc journey. Some days can be so rough.

Take care

Hey! Hope you are well.

Just stopping by with a mini update: had my 'phone appt with the GP this afternoon who said that although my oestrogen levels look low there is no sign of imminent menopause! :)

She said Day 1 or Day 3 wouldn't make too much difference, so I asked to be tested again on Day 3 just for peace of mind and she suggested Day 4!

Hoping that AF doesn't come and that I can forget about all of this but if she does, I can test next week.

Depending on results she will consider prescribing Clomid. Tried it before (prior to IVF) and just got bloated but who can't hurt, can it?

Have a good day!

ThAt is AWESOME news:)!!! LOve the idea of rechecking hormones on day four:)!!
Maybe we will both get lucky and get a bfp next week and then we won't have to worry about any of this stuff. I hate it!

Anyway, I am so happy you are getting accurate information now:)!

I def think clomid can only help...just my opinion from my experience:)!

Tell me more about your Clomid experience, if you don't mind, please. The 'new' GP seemed reluctant telling me that I don't need it because I am ovulating. Any info that can help me persuade her would be wonderful.

In the meantime, praying that we both have BFP. Been peeing on sticks for days although it's day 28 today...and nothing so far. :(

I was given clomid only because of my age by my OB. I did have regular cycles, am not overweight, and have normal treated controlled low thyroid. My first three rounds of clomid didn't work. The increase to 100mg clomid did work. I only had one egg but it was very good size when I got bfp. Prior to increase in clomid the previous cycles showed smaller eggs. I would assume the smallness is due to my age. Just my thoughts.
This cycle on 50mg, one egg small :(. Dr. should have started me out on 100mg:(.
Hope that helps. This is my personal experience :)

Oh my gosh!!! That info is invaluable! Thank you so much. I am hoping that whatever my day 4 results are that the doc can help me...otherwise we are going to be selling our home to pay for IVF with DE. :) You are wonderful today, too. Thank you. :)

I truly hope it doesn't come down to selling your home for IVF. Hopeful it can happen without that for you and DH. But, you just never know..there is a grand plan but it maybe IVF. We just always have to keep going :).
