Hello and a question about Vitamin Supplements

Postby Lily1218 » Fri Nov 30, 2012 4:32 pm

Hi Everyone,

I'm 40yo, from rural Australia and have been trying to conceive for the first time for the last two months. I just wanted to say hello to everyone and that I'm really glad to have found such an active community of lovely women. I've found the last two months a pretty isolating experience and its been such a relief to realise I'm not going insane and that others are experiencing many of the same things I am.

I was wondering what vitamin supplements people are taking to help with conception. I tried taking a pregnancy and conception multi but it made me feel quite ill and my research on what I should take doesn't always seem to tally with what I see in the multi's (in particular in regards to amounts) so I'm quite confused. I'm erring on the side of caution atm and sticking to folate, vitamin C and vitamin D (because I don't get out in the sun much).

HI Lily, I'm not actually taking anything but have had certain tablets stopped by my gp.. cholesterol, anti d.s, and anti epileptic drugs ... and put on a higher dose of folic acid.
Was thinking of taking something myself like pregnacare, but gp and gyneacologist have never mentioned anything about supplements. I suppose if you eat healthily, and take regular exercise, which I'm now adapting to, it should be enough. Ppl on ttc forum may know more x

Hi Gilly,

I've also been taken off medication for heart and have had to quit work due to that and have just quit smoking (for the 4th time but this time hubby has quit too so hopefully it sticks). I have an appointment with a gynecologist but its a 4month wait here so won't get to see him till February. He better be brilliant and worth the wait lol.

I think eating healthy and exercising is probably the best option. I eat fairly well but since I was diagnosed with my heart condition I've been scared to exercise and have put on heaps of weight. I think the heart medication messed with my metabolism as well because I don't eat any more than I used to and I was never an exercise fanatic. I've bought a treadmill and have been trying to walk 30min a day. Maybe I'll just start researching what foods contain all the good conception vitamins and change my diet up a bit.

Thanks for your answer and nice to meet you :)

30 minutes on a treadmill is good lily, I am terrible for exercise but got a dog given to me few month ago, take him round the park 3 times everyday plus my general running around and lost half a stone. TRying to walk him twice round now which will take an hour each trip. just check with your is lily before upping any exercise. But good luck x empire rose has a secret Facebook page for us 40plus chicks join us x

Hi Rose,
I'm from Northern NSW, not quite the middle of nowhere but close lol. That's a long list of supplements! I'll have a look into it and maybe make an appointment with doctor to ask her about what she thinks I should take and in what amounts. I hate that it takes so long just to see a gyno around here.

Gilly.. A dog is a great way to motivate to get some exercise. Congrats on the weight loss. My poor dog looks at me walking on the treadmill, looks at his lead and just sighs :P. I've actually gained weight since I started exercising but I feel healthier so I guess that's what really counts. I also do Tai Chi which I highly recommend to anyone although not being aerobic it doesn't help with weight.

I'd love to join the facebook group but I'm ultra paranoid about facebook and what I post online using my real name. I have a second facebook account that I used to use for silly facebook games, would you mind if I joined using that account?

hi ladies. i used to be an active member on this site. i conceived at 41y 9m and had my final production at 42.5. it took me 8 months of active ttc to conceive her. she is now 2.5 and i just turned 45. i am officially retired! when i saw this question, i wanted to share because i took a lot of supplements while ttc. i will try to remember what i took. royal jelly and bee pollen. i took 1600mcg of folic acid. 81mg aspirin, green tea only before o to boost cm, i also took an expectorant that i just cant remember the name of, (it wasnt guafenesin). epo didnt do much for me, but its definitely worth a try. it works for some. oh yes. and wheat germ oil. i took that every day. also i took co q10. i figured anything good for anti-aging would be good for my old eggies. i stopped eating most sugar except for black strap molasses which is full of iron. i used to make huge things of hibiscus tea with the molasses and it tasted like prune juice, but it wasnt bad. i increased my water intake a lot. i stepped up on the fruits and veggies also. i also prayed alot and the cycle i got pregnant, i took femara. cd3-7, unmonitored. i learned so much on this site and i dont think id have my little lily if i didnt do the things i learned here. i went and requested the 3 day fsh test to see if i was in normal range. i got a mid cycle u/s and saw my eggie hanging off ready to jump. i got my prolactin and thyroind tested and they were normal. i also went for u/s to check my uterine lining. it was 10mm. i wanted to make sure the baby would have something to latch onto. also, i learned how to chart and i only got to do it the one cycle i got my bfp. timing is everything. ;-) that is all i remember. i am very blessed. that was my formula and what i did. i believe my chart is still in my siggy. i wish everyone here gets their bfp asap and hope anything i said helps someone. good luck!

Thanks for the advice and congrats on your lovely little girl. Did you stop taking most of that stuff once you knew you were pregnant? What is confusing me is all the advice I'm seeing that says 'take x for conception' followed by 'don't take x while pregnant'.
