TTC in our 40's ~ welcome new friends!

Postby Clementine37 » Sat Apr 13, 2013 10:19 pm

Hi ladies. I'm pretty new to the boards...posting anyway. I did a lot of stalking before that! :D. I wanted to start a new thread for us ladies in our 40's so we could each share our journey and cheer each other on. I hope having a new thread will encourage new friends to join in on the conversation. The cycling threads seem so overwhelming. I also hope the ladies that have been at this for a while will join in and share their wisdom. We have so much to learn from each other! I started CD1 today. Planned HSG this Thursday and then first (and hopefully last) IUI :D. How about you?

Hi Clementime, I'm here :) I am CD 8 and still trying to shake a terrible cold/cough. AF ended this weekend, I hope I O this month cuz right now with my illness my temps are all over the place and my CM is already different probably because of the dayquil/nyquil I'm taking so who knows.

Also trying to look sexy with red nose and watery eyes, no make up and a cough like a walrus is no small feat! DH is avoiding me like the plague, LOL. At our age I really don't want to miss a month of trying, so FX this all clears up this week. IF I O according to my previous cycles it shouldn't be for another 6 - 8 days so hopefully, I'll be glamorous by then!

Good Clementime with your next RE appt, I hope it is everything you need it to be. I so excited and blessed to be sharing this journey with wonderful women my age :) DH and I hopefully want more than one over the next couple of years so you are my inspiration!!

Blessings to all!

Hi Clementine, thanks for the invite over. I've been here for a couple weeks now, but on my 11th month TTC. Past three months I've been TTC with clomid. I needed a break this month and I'm now on CD 5. Feeling very discouraged, as I hoped it wouldn't take this long to conceive. Going to try preseed this month for the first time. I have an appointment next month with an RE if no success.

Hi Tammy! Hi Becca! I'm so happy that we have the beginnings of a new group!

Tammy ~ your story about coughing like a walrus and looking glamorous while you're sick made me laugh so much. Currently, my DH has a massive case of poison ivy...pretty much all over his body. So, I've been avoiding him like the plague and I definitely didn't get it past him. He was joking last night how I probably think he's "hideous"...Poor guy. Luckily, it was perfect timing being the week of AF lol...you know it's all about TTC :D. I really hope you feel better soon! I hear ya about not wanting to miss a month. To me, each month that goes by feels like a year. How long have you been TTC?

Becca ~ I'm sorry you're feeling so discouraged. I had a major pity party last week where I cried for two days. We've been TTC for 9 months now so, I can only imagine how 11 months feels :(. Do you have any children yet? I have two boys and basically got pregnant with them just thinking about it. I was so naive going into this thinking this would be a piece of cake. Get married in August then get pregnant boom!! Yeah right . We've been using pre-seed and really like it. Some ladies swear by it. I hope it's just what you need to get your BFP this cycle!

Have either of you had any testing done yet? How about your DH? Do you use OPK's, temping....?

I've had a lot of bloodwork which all comes back normal and shows ovulation. Have had u/s confirming O too. DH has low morphology at 1% but his other numbers are great. I did one round of clomid last month, use preseed, soft cups last month, DH is on multi vites and fertilaid. I'll have an HSG on Thursday with a natural TTC cycle because my RE won't do meds or IUI in the same cycle. I'm on CD3 so were all pretty close in our cycles :D

I'm so glad to have you ladies to share this journey with! I pray this is our month.

Hello friends,

I have been doing my share of stalking, oh yes... I am 42, ds is 20 and hoping for a little one with my new husband (4yrs together). We have been ttc for 4-5 months. I got preg accidentally last year and had a mc at around 4weeks.
What do you think of my chart?

Really hoping for a BFP for mom who is in the hospital..

My husband and I got married last May and have been TTC ever since. I turned 40 in July, but like you I thought it would just happen. I have two sons from my previous marriage, 10 & 4, both conceived with IVF, but only because of male infertility factor. I have never had any problems. My cycles have been consistently 32 days since I can remember. This time around before prescribing clomid, my OB/GYN did the test where they check your tubes for blockages, and everything looked great. I'm still ovulating, and DHs sperm tests were all normal. He is 41 and has no children of his own. I don't temp - been there, done that! For me it causes more stress. I have been using OPKs though.

Sounds like we all have similar stories. I wish I could get out of this slump of feeling so discouraged. Taking this month to just relax, and next month we have an appointment with an RE. Never thought we'd have to take that route. And now that clomid has been unsuccessful after 3 tries, I just feel like nothing it going to work. And this last round of clomid put me over the edge. I had ever pregnancy symptom in the book. My breasts are still swollen! But I also has a ton of pain in my pelvis. I'm thinking I may have been overstimulated and grew large cysts on my ovaries. The pain lasted from ovulation until AF. I still have some back pain too, but it's going away slowly.

I've also read that clomid thins our uterus linings, and at our age, that is not good. My OB did not monitor me, so i have no idea how I really responded to clomid. Hoping the RE can watch things a little more closely, but our insurance does not cover anything related to infertility, so we will have to see what happens.

Have you put any thought into how far you want to go, or how long you want to keep trying?

Welcome Frannie! Your chart looks good :D. I hope and pray that you get your BFP this month. I also pray that everything will be okay with your mom. If you don't mind me asking, why is she in the hospital?

Hey Becca! Sorry you're feeling so discouraged these days. This definitely takes its toll. On a related note: I was wondering this morning how many marriages have been destroyed due to infertility and TTC issues. I don't blame you for not temping. In my opinion, if you know you are ovulating, then there is really no reason to temp because it only tells you after the fact anyway. As you can see by my chart, I don't temp during AF...it's my gift to me each month for having to deal with her :D. I will temp again this month because of last months cycle debacle...just want to make sure I'm back to "normal". Next month, I won't temp because I'll be monitored with u/s during the IUI process. I really hope you didn't grow cysts on your ovaries! Is that something they will check for if the pain doesn't go away? Does that have an impact on TTC this cycle? Don't lose hope. If this month is not your month, the RE will be able to help you. In the meantime, get some preseed, eat some pineapple core for 5 days after O (good for a "squishy" uterine lining for the baby to snuggle in :D) and enjoy the BD :D

To answer your question about how far we will go: At the very start, DH and I said we would go to whatever extreme to start to have our baby. The RE immediately recommended IVF with possible ICSI due to his low-morphology and "my situation". That completely turned me off to that idea because I don't really have a "situation" except that I'm 43 years old (she was a witch). All of my tests have been normal. We then decided to try ourselves and, if that didn't work, we would go only as far as IUI. I've always told him, though, that we shouldn't say never to anything just yet and that we need to take each day as it comes. We are so lucky that his insurance covers infertility including IVF. I think I'm back to the "I will do anything for a baby" mind set and will go the IVF route, if necessary. And then, adoption. I was adopted and it is the most amazing thing that could have happened to me. I am blessed with the most wonderful parents anyone could ever want and I could definitely love another baby like that. How about you....what do you think your max is for trying?

Welcome to all the newbie's... The more ladies on here the better for all of us... :D I look forward to learning from your experiences, I think most of the BFP ladies on here would say this forum has assisted them to get their BFP from the knowledge they have gained from it.. :D

me in a nut shell, TTC since June 2012, did acupuncture in June, for me it totally messed me up, took 6 months to adjust back to normal cycle, now only issue I have is high FSH 17.98.. so started DHEA 25mg 3 times a day to lower FSH... just finished 1 month on it... will be repeating the FSH in June..

DH- Perfect
ME- DOR due to age

March 2013 started taking DHEA 25mg 3 times a day FSH is now 8.5... down from 17.8 from 3 months earlier. They want it well below 10.

June, 2013- AMH level .016 (low) they want it over 1.

June 2013- Antral Follicle Ct- 6 (low) they want it over 10.

Hi Second_Chance - it's great to have you join our chat! :D I was thinking about DHEA this morning as I was at the pharmacy. My FSH is good at 5.2, BUT my RE says its falsely low because my estradiol is slightly elevated (high estradiol pushes down FSH). She said she didn't think it was THAT falsely low, but was a little fuzzy with her information. Does the DHEA mess with your cycles if you have regular cycles? That is my fear because of my experience with Vitex last month...never again for me! I think it's great for girls with irregular cycles or short LP, etc. but it threw off my otherwise like-clockwork cycle last month. I guess you can relate with your acupuncture debacle....UGH! I cannot wait to hear the results of your new FSH test!!

Clementine37 - I have not seen any changes to my cycle to date, still waiting for AF so not totally sure, but now at 13DPO so it didnt mess with it that bad, I normally have a 14DPO, last month was a 16DPO but I think due to the clomid, but I dont suspect I will make it to 16DPO this cycle for AF..

My opinion I dont think you need the DHEA, your number is good, even if its a little off its still low, they want it below 10..

In reading your past post, my DH had a motility issue, and we started him on selium 200mg and zinc 50 mg 1 each a day, when he redid the test about 2 1/2 months later, he came back excellent in all areas... so something you might want to consider for him, that may be your issue right there, plus the IUI will only use good swimmers so that may do the trick as well..

On my CD3 tests, my FSH was at that level, when I did the "clomid challenge" I think my FSH was higher like 10-something, but my RE didn't really explain. I don't know if that's failing the challenge or maybe it's closer to a C :D. Do you still think that DHEA wouldn't really do the trick? I do hope that if we are not successful this month that the IUI will give his little guys just the boost they need. His motility is good...it's his morphology that's at 1%. Do the selenium and zinc help with that too? I guess it can't hurt to see what's already in his multi-vite and fertility blend and supplement that if needed. Thanks for the advice! I really appreciate it. There are so many things to try...it's just a matter of finding the right combo for each of us :D.

Hi ladies, I would like to join. Turned 40 years today, been TTC since end of last May 2012, TLR on April 2012 and HSG in December 2012. Left tube blocked and the short end of my two tubes. Right tube open and good. I tried a variety of supplements and vitamins. My cycles are usually 25-26 days however last month stopped at 24 days. My Ovulation is anywhere from CD10 thru CD 13/14 typically. It is never on the same day. My DH and I are together for almost 9 years and decided it was the right time to finally try.

Unfortunately, it takes a lot longer than anticipated though we were aware of the length of time it might take. My DH is up for a SA however has not quiet gotten over the hurdle of pride and therefore such is still pending examination.

However, I have learned that relaxation in various forms can aid the TTC and therefore try very hard to be patient.

Today is CD 21 and I am 10 dpo. I decided on a spontaneous "hump" to use OPKs this month and you can see the results in my signature line.

However I am hoping that this month is our BFP blessing.

Welcome Williamsbaby and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! :D

That's a lot of positives! Are these the smiley face ones or the ones where you practically have to be a forensics expert to decipher whether or not the line is darker from the day before?? I've only used the smiley face ones...OPK's for Dummies :D and applaud the girls who have the patience to use the others. I would go insane...more so than I already am with this TTC obsession.

SA is such a touchy subject with the guys. My DH had a difficult time and his ego was a bit bruised when the test came back with morphology issues. He's 15 years younger than me so we thought for sure if we were going to have issues, it would be me. I'll tell you what though, the guy was so relieved when it was him because he'd rather it be him than me! A nice reminder of one of the reasons I married him in the first place :D

You're almost done with the "wait!" Lucky you :). Are you working with a doctor or doing this on our own?

I hope and pray this is your BFP month!! Keep us posted! xx

Clementine you are funny!! And I admit the Smiley kind. Clear blue. It was an extravagance on my part. I typically don't use OPKs mainly due to the cost and because I track my cm so to speak. I BBT as well though took a month off last cycle.
I have mainly participated on blogs with a diverse group of women - which I still do- however thought it be nice to exchange best practices with women my age group that have been TTC for a minute or planning on doing so.

I do have a specialist however she won't do a full fertility work up until my DH caves in and completes the SA.

Meanwhile though I have looked up some more RE specialist that are also board certified gyno/obgyn and recognized by http://www.sart.com and where I could review their track records of life birth, cancellation, multiples etc. It is a good tool to have.

We decided to wait until the right time as the economy threw some challenges our way a few times. We are more stable now in a lot of aspects and our precious boys are graduating starting next year back to back from Sr High School. We are very proud of them and they keep us "grounded" in a lot of ways.

My DH is a few years younger but we always joke that his height makes up for the age difference and so far Mother Nature has blessed me with a youthful body and ways! Even though I have put on a substantial amount in the past three years - I had three abdominal surgeries and the medication stimulated increased appetite.

However, last months my DH and I we did a two week detox and body cleanse. Then two weeks off and just maintaining healthy portions and this month we did a 10day fertility smoothly challenge. After such we took a few days off and started yesterday our 5 day fish and whole grain rice challenge.

Info for the fertility smoothly challenge can be found on http://www.naturalfertility.com

I also like http://www.fairhaven.com

Anyway, that about sums up our TTC journey so far.

Products I have tried range from EPO,royal jelly, women's best friend, wobenenzyme, fertilaid for men and women, progesterone cream, Vitex, b6, prenatal, preseed though just one month, fertility tea, etc
All our babies have become angels now!!
