My 40yr old ovaries...

Postby WannaPeanut » Mon Jan 05, 2015 12:22 pm

My ovaries are SCREAMING AT ME TODAY. I'm sitting here at work...my 40 yr old body reminding me that I still ovulate, but I can't fall PG. We have a miracle 6yr old son and we lost a baby at 9wks in May 2012. We really want another child, but the last tests from my fertility doc indicated my ovarian reserve was crap and my FSH was horrid too. The missed miscarriage indicated an abnormal pregnancy where the baby stopped forming after 5wks, so I just had tissue mass. Still it was a baby in our hearts that was just not going to make it to birth and we miss that angel every.single.day.

I am SCARED of falling PG again. Of another pregnancy loss, but I am still yearning for another child. How many women here have gotten PG 40+? I need hope!

I am 40 years old and 25 weeks pregnant. I went through 2 miscarriages and 1 CP to get here, but everything is going well with a boy due in April. Try not to lose hope. Anything is possible!

I hear you wannapeanut. I'm sitting here about to cry over my coffee because i too am 40 and have been trying for #3 for what feels like eternity. I get so fed up but cannot give up.
Just had a hsg a few hours ago and was reminded that i have diminished ovarian reserve which everyone barks on about because i'm 40. Blahhhhhhh.....I feel so shackled by this dx. It's soooo frustrating. I just don't know if i'm supposed to give up. And i just don't know how i can.

Wish we were sharing a coffee right now so we could b**ch about our ovaries...lol!!!

Wannapeanut, don`t give up hope. I had my dd2 at 40 and my ds2 at 45. I had 1 mmc when I was 42 and I have had 2 mmc in the last year but I am still hopeful for another baby. I am a lot older than you (48) but I know that I am still ovulating, so all the time that happens I still have hope. I know that the odds of a miscarriage are high, and the odds of pregnancy are low but as I have been pregnant twice in the last year it is obviously not impossible, I just need a healthy baby and my GP has given me progesterone to support a pregnancy.

I have been tweaking things in my favour by using softcups and preseed and I am sure that they helped me conceive. I did try vitex but it caused a lot of odd bleeding. The other thing I use is pregnacare conception. We have decided to try to conceive naturally because we do not qualify for any fertility treatment and can`t afford to pay for it. I think I will probably give up if I have another mc, but I have hope that we could be lucky.

There are a lot of women on this site that are trying and succeeding to have babies in their 40`s and I find that that gives me hope also. Good luck and I will kmfx for you.

no kidding! Holding coffee cups that say BITCHIN OVARIES! LOL I know that shackling feeling by crappy dx. It really just derailed me mentally. And it irks me that I still have perfectly timed AF, but can't fall PG. I mean COME ON! Give me something for having to deal with the with every month!

Yep-pregnant naturally. I took prenatals, CoQ10 and crossed my fingers. It worked! I had DD at age 38 followed by 2 MCs and 1 CP. Unfortunately, I think those losses are one of the costs of trying for baby at 40. But I am now 26 weeks and so far so good. Wishing you luck on your journey!

So WannaPeanut, i hope you don't mind me asking, but what is your ttc plan. Are you going au naturale or would you consider other options?

The reason i ask is because this is on my own mind a lot. I want to achieve pregnancy naturally but the dr's don't seem to instill much hope. My dh is against any medical intervention so that only leaves me with continuing to go natural with the possibility of revisiting clomid (reluctantly) to increase follies.

I'm also wondering what your dr's opinions have been. Are they optomistic or are they all frowny and non-committal like my bunch? Would love to hear what your experience has been.

Mamabear1 -

So 10yrs ago DH was against any medical intervention. He figured it was just stress (like most people do) and wanted to wait until we had any tests done. Well he quickly realized that something was amiss and we did the testing as you can see from my siggy. After my last MC and the low ovarian reserve news , we have felt deflated. I reached out recently to the FIRST fertility specialist, but after thinking about it , DH reminded me how unhappy we were w/ their lack of communication. So now I"m considering seeing another specialist within the same office. I would love to try IVF, but realistically cannot afford the treatment of a cycle. SO we keep trying and praying that perhaps there is a 3rd pregnancy in our future. This cycle i'm in my 2ww and my boobs are SUPER sore and I had a major ramp up of O pains. We BD during the right time so its a wait and see. I hate the 2ww, but I feel like I just have to stop putting off trying each month. The 2nd fertility Dr who told me about my low ovarian reserve immediately pulled IVF off the table. Said it wasn't worth it and they didn't work with those numbers. I mean, can you imagine how I felt? Ugh.

Hi ladies, I hope you don't mind me jumping in to your discussion. I am curious about all of the testing you have done. fsh and hsg etc? I don't even know what these terms stand for.. I am 45 and only just got the go ahead from DH to start trying again for another baby. I had my last baby at 40 and had no problems. I was clearly oblivious to all of the over 40 problems for getting pregnant and realize that this may be very difficult, if not impossible. I see that many of you have used some supplements and progesterone, etc. Did you have it prescribed? Can I just start using some of these supplements to increase our chances? I will be following along with you all and praying for you to see that BFP soon, and have it stick!! OP, thank you for your post as it has opened my eyes to the journey ahead...

Hi Kayben - welcome! That's wonderful to hear things were trouble free for you at 40yo ttc. There are the statistics the Dr's throw at us, then there are the stories like yours that keep the rest of us going - and hopeful. I really really wish i could be one of those 40yo success stories but it doesn't seem to be working out that way. I wish you all the best for trying again now.

As for the testing and supplements, for me these are things i have picked up along the way on my very lonnnnnggggg journey ttc #3. This site has been a great source of information, as has Google :)

I new the statistics but thought i'd give myself a fighting chance, so when nothing had happened after about 4mths, i started supplements etc. I've tried a host of things and am still on some of those now. I'd say one of the most important would be Coq10 for egg health. Currently i am also on vit E, pre-natal, baby aspirin (from O to af), and a potion of chinese herbs - i have weekly acupuncture too (costs a fortune - but what else can i do?).

As for the testing (eg hsg), this was all part of a fertility healthy check. They also checked my amh (or egg reserve) which isn't great. I must say, i have had to be very clued up on everything and been my own advocate. None of these tests or supplements were prescribed to me without me asking for them first. So i've really had to know my stuff. The Dr's are all very vague and kind of shrug their shoulders about my chances of conceiving -they give me no hope quoting my age all the time. I have no other fertility barriers (oh except dh's questionable swimmers) - it's purely age related. Sucks pretty bad as i've been at this now since Oct 2013 :(

I wish you success and a trouble free ttc journey.

mamabear1,
What an amazing story you have of endurance and love for your future little one... I did have a baby at 40 with no problems. i miscarried between 7 and 8 but otherwise a problem free pregnancy, so it can be done. It may have helped that I wasnt aware that it would be difficult and my obgyn was all for it. She warned of statistics, but since it made no difference to us, we never even opted for those tests. I will be following your posts and praying for you, for peace through your ups and downs as you wait for #3!

Ladies - I'm pretty sure I O'd on cd 12 or 14 at the absolute latest. That would make me 15dpo and no sign of AF at all.

Based on our BD schedule, think we stand a chance? Should I test already?! My months can average 26-29 days so its hard to say I"m "late" just yet....
