high cholesterol problems

Postby shelie85 » Thu Apr 12, 2012 7:36 pm

hi :) i'm new to the site, and was reading some posts, i too have irregular cycles and am having a hard time ttc, but around dec of last year i was tested for high cholesterol, which might have been preventing me from ovulating. i went on a strict diet, brought my weight and cholesterol in a healthy normal range and my last 3 cycles have been closer together, and within 38-41 days, which is making it alot easier to chart my temps and such! just wondering if maybe anyone else was in the same boat, and if theres light the end of the tunnel, lol.

Did they run any other test for PCOS such as LH; FSH; TSH; Androgens? I have PCOS w/elevated cholesterol but they tested for all the above too which could also be out of range.

all my blood work and ultrasounds have come up normal, but they also said it can be hard to detect PCOS if there isn't one there at the moment of ultrasound and such. Pretty much crossing fingers that its just the cholesterol, which i've already lowered, but its still slow going. but to cover all my bases, i'm on a waiting list for a fertility specialist, see what our options are in case we can't conceive naturally :)

i live in canada, no kids at all, married for 7yrs, ttc for 3yrs off and on. i've switched dr's last year, the old one had no interest in helping us at all, he kept having interns handling us when we went for bloodwork and such, so we were constantly answering the same questions to diff ppl everytime, i never got any results unless i pushed for them, so we got fed up and looked elsewhere, and the first thing the new dr asks, have i ever had my cholesterol checked? she said because of my weight, and a fainting spell i had, it should have been checked a long time ago if we were ttc! lol, so we're kinda starting over fresh :) hopefully it won't be a long wait!

Hey hey! Sorry to revive this old thread but I was browsing for high cholesterol and irregular cycles on the internet and find this topic. I was diagnosed with high cholesterol levels as well. I am also struggling getting pregnant and I am looking for some good advice... Shelie, do you have any new information for me? How did you manage to lower your cholesterol levels?*
Thanks.

hi Ana! i'm happy to give you some pointers and good news, whenever someone tells me they're having a hard time ttc and everything else is normal i tell them to get their cholesterol checked, lol! basically i went on a very strict, very low sugar, carb & fat diet for 3 months. i lost 35lbs, and my cholesterol levels dropped drastically. i didn't really excercise but i worked as a housekeeper so i'm sure that helped too. after the diet, i had to waste a few cycles since my body was trying to figure itself out again, but i got preggo on the 3rd cycle, unfortunately m/c, but the next cycle we conceived again, and we now have a happy healthy 4.5month old son! as for the diet, my dr gave me a guideline sheet on foods to avoid, foods to moderate and foods to eat in abundance. i ate alot of chicken breasts, lean hamburg and multigrain breads. also every meal i had a salad with (no dressing, salsa instead), and cooked veggies. to make it easier i would cook ALOT at once then i always had something in the fridge to pick from, same with the chicken. hope this helps you :) and good luck!

Heyhey! Thanks for getting back to me. I talked to a friend of mine who has similar problems as well. While my cholesterol levels were not that high (but still pretty higher than they should be), my doctor told me that this could be the cause of my problems.

I will try to stick to a diet that will help me lower cholesterol levels. I hpoe I'll stick to the diet long enough, as I have a problem with being strict to myself (I'm terrible, I know. I also have a sweet tooth and I'm not proud of that). But please give me some advice on how to stop being an addict to sweets :((
But you said you were successful so I'll give it a try too. And by the way - congratulations for your son! I am really happy for you!

My diet: I plan on eating less sugar, more lean protein and only healthy fats (the ones you can find in fish or nuts). For other girls that might suffer from similar problems there is some useful information on cholesterol I've found on this link on high cholesterol diet. As far as cholesterol levels go I will try to lower them to normal levels again, which are the following:
For EU:
Normal cholesterol level is anything under 5 mmol/l.
Normal HDL cholesterol level is anything above 1,1 mmol/l.
Normal LDL cholesterol level is anything below 3 mmol/l.
For US:
Normal cholesterol level is anything under 200 mg/dl.
Normal HDL cholesterol level is anything above 40 mg/dl.
Normal LDL cholesterol level is anything below 100 mg/dl.
More info about cholesterol.
I hope that in 3 months I will be able to see some results and that my cholesterol levels will improve (be lower). Than we will see. Thanks shelie for your valuable tips. Keep in touch.
