Can vitamin D affect fertility?

Postby sapoland » Mon Mar 26, 2012 7:28 pm

I just found out I am very deficient in vitamin D and have begun taking 5000mg before bed for the past few days. I'm waiting to ovulate so I hope that this will help make a difference. I've been having trouble getting pregnant for two years. I'm not sure how long I've been deficient but just wanted some input on what you ladies think and if anyone else has done any research on this.

Wow ... I just googled infetility and Vitamin D deficiency and I got over 100 hits... articles do state there is a correlation between Vitamin D deficiency and infertility .. here is just one article:

http://www.naturalnews.com/News_000465_ ... ealth.html

The good thing is I read that you can not get too much Vitamin D so you don't have to worry about taking too much which would lessen your chance of pregnancy.

I found that 2000 IU of vitamin D per day as a safe upper limit dosage for anyone over one year old.

So interesting!! I hope this is the quick fix that I needed!! I've used pre-seed with no luck before, so now I'm just going to be adding the 5000mg of Vitamin D (dr's orders) for the next three months. Been trying for two years, so if I get knocked up in the next three months, we know what helped! I'll try to keep posted!

good luck sapoland. I am currently taking prenatal vitamins which I have been since we started TTC and I see my vitamin aready have 400 IU or 10 mcg (which is 10,000 mg)

Your dr said 5000 mg/daily? Are you already taking a daily vitamin that could already have Vitamin D?

I'm taking prenatals as well, but because I'm SO deficient in Vitamin D, she suggested I take a very high dosage each day for three months to get my levels back up to normal, and then get on a maintenance of 2000mg/day.

TTCnumber2at42 - Regarding Vitamin D dose, 10 mcg = 0.01 mg not 10,000 mg. Prenatals have only a tiny amount of Vitamin D.

sapoland - I imagine it was 5000iu that was ordered for you, that would be a common dose for Vitamin D deficiency that would be over 10 times as much as a typical prenatal. In severe cases they will order as much as 50,00iu once a week and then a lower maintanance dose once at better levels.

For the average person TTC about 1000iu (sometimes 2000iu) is often recommended.

Thanks Halifax for the clarification.

I think instead of adding another vitamin to my mix I am going to try to get outside more (more sunshine)

Vitamin D was about the only thing I started taking after my first loss (living in Canada we get a lot less sun than many places, especially in winter). I can't say if it made any difference for me or not, but all the research I have seen suggests it is beneficial in other areas of health as well and seems to have no potential bad side effects so both my husband and I have been supplementing for several years now. Certainly getting extra sun exposure is good, just hard to muster sometimes, a least now we should be moving into warmer and sunnier weather.

Are you currently taking a lot of stuff other than prentals?

I have been researching so much and reading all I can about TTC naturally after RE will not treat us anymore with IUI's and we can't aford IVF at $12,000 /treatment. So here is what I am taking:

Hot water with Lemon first thing in morning
Prenatal Vitamins
CoEnzymeQ10 200 mg x 3 daily (for egg health improvement)
Maca 2000 mg daily
Wheatgrass
1-2 Red Raspberry Leaf tea daily (before O)

I really would appreciate your input ....

Right now, the only things I use are pre-seed and vitamin D and my prenatals which for some reason, aren't as easy to remember to take as my other things.

I bought some herbs from a local store that are supposedly used for fertility, one of which is a red clover blend that I put in a tea ball and choke down...I hear it's not the most pleasant taste. The other is....chasteberry I believe, which is vitex in herbal form. The lady suggested I mix them together in the tea ball and drink it once or twice a day.

Would you suggest I do that I start that tomorrow even after I've ovulated (Oing now/tomorrow) and continue until I get my BFP or through my next cycle? Would any of you suggest anything else I can add for the next...11 days? Lol. I ovulated pretty late this cycle.

sapoland- I would be very wary about using the chasteberry (Vitex), it can be helpful in women with known cycle issues, but I have seen it mess up cycles for women who are Oing on their own and have no hormonal imbalances going on. It seems to be best for those with very irregular cycles, annovulation, and very short LP.

Regarding red clover, it has isoflavones (some women use this at beginning of cycle almost like clomid) and can increase estrogen. levels...might not be something to take all cycle long, and again unless you have menstrual issues or hormonal issues that it can help with, it can actually mess up a system that is already working fine. One has to be very careful with some of the things that are suggested to "increase fertility"...been on these boards a long time and I see all sorts of reactions to them.

Well poop. Now I'm a little hesitant to use them...maybe I'll just stick to the vitamins and healthier, nutrient-rich foods. Lol.

I have also seen good reports on vitamin D, as someone who also lives in a an area with little winter light plus Celiac disease, I have begun taking them. Since about November last year.

Sapoland, I will also throw in CoQ10 as something to look into for egg quality.

My RE told me about CEnyzmeQ10 for egg quality. I take 200 mg x 3 daily. I have posted the link about the study completed in Toronto by Dr Casper one of the leading RE's in Canada. I attached the less clinical link but if you google CoenzymeQ10 TCART you can read more.

I was boarderline low in Vitamin D and began taking 5,000 iu a day! I began mid cycle. My TSH went within normal range, my LH lowered, my FSH lowered, I ovulated beautifully and the first full cycle on it I was pregnant!

During the winter months I take 10,000 iu a day and summer months 5,000 iu a day. My DH and I definitely notice a difference when we have not been taking it!

You have to make sure it is D3 though! :-)
