TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine)

Postby baruderu » Wed May 08, 2013 11:40 am

Hi all

I am new to this site and have found it quite useful and supportive already!

I wanted to share my story of TCM in the hopes that it may help some of you. It's a bit of a long story so I apologise in advance!

I will be turning 40 this September. In early 2012 I started having the worst menstrual cramps for nearly 2 weeks out of every month (one week before my AF and throughout AF). The kind of pain that makes it impossible to stand straight or function at all. I went to my doctor and was eventually diagnosed with endometriosis. I treated the symtoms with pain mediction, and other medication that reduced my blood loss during AF. It worked, but I wanted to get to the root of the problem and cure it rather than just manage the symptoms. The specialist suggested scraping out the endometrial tissue that had formed, a procedure that would likely have to repeated over the years. As a fan of alternative health practices I sought the help of a TCM practitoner. He listened to my story and asked questions about my health, both mental and physical, took my pulse, checked my tongue, and put me on daily herbal tea (powdered herbs) and weekly acupuncture. Within one cycle the cramping had diminished so much I didn't need any of the pain pills. Within 3 months I fell pregnant (even though we weren't trying!) My husband and I were elated!. At 8 weeks I had some little twinges and my doctor sent me for an early scan. We saw our little baby's heart beating and couldn't believe how happy we were. Sadly, when it came time for the 12 week scan no heartbeat could be found and I had a d&c the next day. (This was in July 2012)
A few months passed and my husband and I moved to Canada (from the UK). We started trying to conceive in October 2012 (on purpose this time!) In December 2012 I fell pregnant again. This pregnancy was even shorter and I miscarried naturally around 5 weeks or so. My new doctor suggested seeing a fertility expert to find out why I seemed to be able to get pregnant but not stay pregnant. I agreed, but also decided to find another practitioner of TCM in the vicinity. I found one, and started TCM again in February 2013. This time it was weekly acupuncture and 2 cups of raw herbal tea (boiled for 70 minutes and then strained) 5x per week. My diet was overhauled as well. Spinach and green leafy vegetables, nuts, blackberries and blueberries, avoid sugar, avoid gluten, avoid certain vegetables that are harder to digest (anything in the broccoli family as an example), no coffee or black tea (not even decaf), and avoid alcohol and cigarettes. Lots of rest, avoid exercise which increases the heart rate (I know! Can you believe it?), and just generally try to be as peaceful and positive as possible. The goal is to funnel as much energy towards the womb as possible. My TCM doctor said to do a minimum of 3 months of treatment before we tried again because the egg that is released every month is actually formed 3-4 months earlier- so the earliest possible impact that the TCM treatment could have would take place in 3-4 months.
It's been 11 weeks now and let me tell you I feel so much better. I've noticed such a difference since I started the treatment. Within 3 weeks I had the first AF of my life where there were no clots, and the colour was bright. Apparently that's how AF is supposed to be! I didn't know that! I feel much less stressed and anxious overall (the acupuncture treatments are amazing. I always fall asleep and feel so peaceful afterwards...and it last several days. My stomach bloat is gone, my bowel movements are erm, very good and regular. I just feel better. TCM is such a great approach to female fertility issues because it treats the whole person, not just the symptoms of a particular problem. Not sure If I am allowed to mention a great book here but the Infertility Cure by Randine Lewis is really helpful in explaining why some women have trouble conceiving from a TCM perspective.

Anyways, my TCM doctor have me the green light to try and conceive this cycle. So we tried! It's only 4 or 5 DPO now but I've had some symptoms already. (I posted on the "Am I pregnant" part of this site yesterday. "Third or fourth time's the charm" is my story- feel free to vote!) I'm going for a blood test this Friday so we shall see! It's not so much the conceiving that I struggle with but rather the getting past the 12 week mark!

I've talked too much now, sorry. I just wanted to share my experience with TCM and how wonderful it's made me feel. Time will tell if it succeeds in helping me carry to term! TCM can also be used in conjunction with other types of fertility treatments as well. At my last acupuncture session the woman in the room next to me had just told the doctor that she was pregnant with twins after using TCM in conjunction with IVF. :-)

PS- Remember how I said I was referred to a Western fertility expert? Well, his office never bothered scheduling an appointment for me so I didn't pursue it. I took that as a sign to stick with TCM! :-)

Thanks Michy. I'm now 6 weeks along and have lovely rising hcg levels and great progesterone as well. I firmly believe that it was the TCM that helped this time. :D If you have any questions I'd be happy to share my experience with TCM. All the best to you.

I am so excited and relieved after reading your journey! I am so sorry to hear about your previous loses, but wish you a happy and healthy 9 months and beyond ahead :) I am returning to acupuncture tomorrow after a 2.5year gap. It then helped me with the severe pain I was suffering each month with the onset of AF. Now that hubby and I are ttc, I am convinced it will help with this too. So happy to hear of your positive experience and best wishes to you!

Thank you! I am also going today after work. I'm a childcare teacher - so any time to myself is relaxing :) !!!! I think it definitely helps to be open to TCM as well, and I'm all for natural remedies as a first point. Just got blood tests back from my GP last night and all in order for me, hormones, etc. so very excited for this cycle :) I'm on cd6, and will be combining acupuncture with SMEP this month if hubby isn't too tired!!!

That sounds wonderful! Fingers crossed that you have a great cycle and everything falls into place. :D I had a wonderful session last night. Extra needles in my neck and top of head to help with the first trimester sleeplessness I seem to be experiencing. I fell asleep on the table within minutes of the doctor inserting the needles. It's so relaxing. Hope you had a good session too!

That sounds so nice! I can't sleep on my back, but was definitely well rested after the session. My acupuncturist is also a doula, so felt very comforted by her approach and experience. I should have prefaced with the fact that I'm 24 and hubby is 26, so we had a little giggle about my anxiety despite having time on my side! Will be doing weekly sessions this first month (hopefully only month before preg treatment!)

You've got time and youth on your side, which is wonderful! :D Today I feel absolutely terrible, the worst I've felt so far, but I'm happy about that because it means that I'm still pregnant :D
