just had this discussion with my RE!

Postby darlingnicole » Sun Jan 18, 2009 1:26 pm

During our first cycle, we did a three day transfer with three fresh embies. None made it, and we had none to freeze.

This cycle (our retrieval is tomorrow) we're planning on doing three if the quality is good and four if it's not so hot. My RE actually called this morning to compliment my cycle (apparently text book perfect!) and we went over all of the options.

Multiples are fine with us, as we would love to have a big family. However, the doctor did say that should we get pregnant with three or four (SLIM CHANCE, but...) we'd have to agree to have a "selective reduction" performed. We're still fighting that now- I know that's what he wants to hear but neither of us are convinced it will be completely necessary. Has anyone ever had to make that decision?

how many eggs

Postby momoftwins » Sun Jan 18, 2009 7:16 pm

darlingnicole...I transferred 3 embryos during my first IVF cycle. I got prgnant with triplets. The RE offered selective reduction, but DH and I just couldn't even consider choosing to abort one of the babies that we had prayed so hard for. I could not choose between my babies and tell them we didn't want one of them. He never mentioned it again.

It was a personal choice and I hope you do not have to even consider such a decision. Hope your retrieval goes well and you get your BFP in 2 weeks.

Nicole- Good luck to you honey!! I pray for a sticky bean or two. And I also pray you don't have to make that decision. My husband and his ex wife had triplets, they (doctor's) wanted to do a selective reduction early on. They decided against it. Little did they know that one of them was really sick and would not make it. To this day, my husband gets choked up at the thought of if he reduced one of the girls who lived and then lost the sick baby, he would only have one. It is such a hard decision to make. I'm praying for you!!!

Well, the RE called this morning to tell us that we have 10 normal embryos out of the 16 they retrieved yesterday. All are much better quality this cycle (different protocol) and they are planning on a day five transfer. We discussed the options of how many to transfer and assuming the quality remains high, we'll transfer three and will not do selective reduction. I'll tell the RE whatever he wants to hear about being open to it, but morally and ethically it isn't something we'd feel comfortable doing.

The only concern all of us have with me carrying triplets is that I've had two previous C-sections, and even though it's been three years since my last, there is always a concern about rupture.

Such a hard decision for anyone. But I think the best thing is to look at the quality and the odds of success.

Thanks for the input ladies, I so appreciate it!

Momoftwins: Did they discuss it with you before transfer? My doctor is giving us the option now, which seems odd, being that we're making a decision based on something that could not even happen.

BelieveinMiracle: Thanks for your prayers. Surely, We're all in need of them!

how many eggs tgo transfer

Postby momoftwins » Tue Jan 20, 2009 8:28 am

Darlingnicole...My RE never brought up the topic until I had my sonogram that showed three babies. I had been an RN for years at that point so I knew it was an option, but not something I would consider.. The RE only wanted to transfer 2 embryos, but I only had one other that had fertilized normally and it wasn't a great grade and quality. I knew that I would have to go back and do a FET for that embryo if I didn't transfer it then b/c I couldn't let them throw it away (it was my baby at that point). I was afraid that I would spend so much money and endure the emotional tourture that IVF brings and not get pregnant with only one embryo to transfer. The RE told me then that with my age that I could very well end up with triplets, but I insisted that all 3 be transferred.

Great news about your retrieval and fertilization. I hope your transfer goes as well. Good luck.
